Events

January

  • January 1
    • Latvia officially adopts the euro as its currency and becomes the 18th member of the Eurozone.[3]
    • Babies born on January 1, 2001, the start of the 3rd millennium, are now old enough to join YouTube, Instagram, and many other online websites. While COPPA does not explicitly require sites to prohibit children under 13 from joining, it does prohibit collection of personal data of said minors without consent, and most websites (such as YouTube and Instagram) take the easy way out and require all users to be at least 13 due to the infeasibility of collecting legal consent for millions of users.
  • January 5 – A launch of the communication satellite GSAT-14 aboard the GSLV Mk.II D5 marks the first successful flight of an Indian cryogenic rocket engine.
