Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress

The Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress is an award presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). It honors an actress who has delivered an outstanding performance in a supporting role while working within the film industry. At the 9th Academy Awards in 1937, Gale Sondergaard was the first winner of this award for her role as Faith Paleologus in Anthony Adverse.[1] Originally, winners in both supporting acting categories were awarded plaques.[2] In 1944 at the 16th ceremony, winners received statuettes.[3] Nominees are determined by single transferable vote within the actors branch of AMPAS. Winners are selected by a plurality vote from all eligible voting members of the Academy.[4]

Dianne Wiest and Shelley Winters have received the most awards in this category with two awards each. Despite never winning, Thelma Ritter was nominated on six occasions, more than any other actress in this category. In 1940, Hattie McDaniel became the first black person to win an award in any of the four acting categories, for Gone with the Wind. In 1958, Miyoshi Umeki became the first Asian actress to win an Oscar, for Sayonara. In 1961, Rita Moreno became the first Hispanic actress to win an Academy Award for West Side Story.[5] At age 10, Tatum O'Neal became the youngest actress to be nominated, and subsequently win, for Paper Moon at the 1974 ceremony. Although several other young girls whose ages have been within weeks or months of O'Neal's age at the time of nominations, her record has held firm for youngest nominee to date as well. And in 1985, at age 77, Peggy Ashcroft became the oldest winner in this category for A Passage to India. Gloria Stuart remains the category's oldest nominee, at age 87. In 2023, Jamie Lee Curtis won the Oscar for her role as Deirdre Beaubeirdre in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Winners and nominees

In the following table, the years are listed as per Academy convention, and generally correspond to the year of film release in Los Angeles County; the ceremonies are always held the following year.[6] For the first five ceremonies, the eligibility period spanned twelve months, from August 1 to July 31.[7] For the 6th ceremony held in 1934, the eligibility period lasted from August 1, 1932, to December 31, 1933.[7] Since the 7th ceremony held in 1935, the period of eligibility became the full previous calendar year from January 1 to December 31.[7]
