Season 1 edit

In the year 2000, Mohana, a 251-year-old daayan who has managed to extend her parasitic existence by sapping the life-force of her victims. Residing in Bhandap, she bewitches businessman Mridul Rathod and eventually ties the knot with him. Together, they have two children, Ansh and Kajal. As Mohana aids her husband in accumulating immense wealth through the use of dark sorcery, she gradually takes away his vitality, ultimately leading to his untimely death.

This unfortunate turn of events prompts Vedashree Rathod, Mridul Rathod's sister-in-law, to grow concerned. She seeks assistance from her friend Divya Sharma, a psychic wizardess and a member of the reevaavanshi, a clan of evil hunters, known for their ability to ward off evil eye. Divya thwarts Mohana's malevolent influence by severing her plait, rendering Mohana powerless. Mohana then escapes into the woods, but they pursue her along with a mob of villagers holding torches. Once cornered, Mohana was set on fire which turns her into stone. Divya seals Mohana in a coffin within a temple, safeguarded by powerful mantras. Not long after these events, Divya mysteriously disappears. Vedashree and her husband, Shekhar Rathod, adopt Ansh and Kajal. Yet Mohana's nazar still lurks on the family as she is a unique and very powerful Daayan called Ekayaan.

18 years later edit

Ansh and Kajal grow up in Mumbai with their cousins Neha and Rishi. Ansh, discovering his supernatural abilities, remains unaware of his identity as a daavansh, a hybrid of daayan and human. Only a daivik (divine conduit) bearing Durga's trishula symbol can save him, and Piya Sharma, Divya's daughter, possesses this mark. Piya, separated from her parents at a young age, arrives in Mumbai searching for her missing mother. Ansh and Piya feel a deep connection, while Piya reunites with her father, Nishant Sharma, who turns out to be her college professor. Mohana manipulates the situation by sending a puppet daayan, Ruby, with a counterfeit daivik symbol to marry Ansh. Ansh and Vedashree fall under Ruby's spell, leading to a marriage between Ruby and Ansh. The marriage releases Mohana from her coffin, restoring her powers, and Ansh discovers the truth about his real mother.

Piya's childhood friend and overzealous lover, Naman, attempts to marry her by taking advantage of Gurumaa, his ailing mother and Piya's guardian, who's a blind priestess. However, the wedding is disrupted by Ansh. Concerned about Ansh's growing affection for Piya, Mohana summons Bhaisasur, Ruby's father, a demon from the underworld, to drive Piya away. Unexpectedly, Bhaisasur attacks Ansh, leading to Piya invoking Devi-Maa for help. Through a tandav Piya kills Bhaisasur, revealing her true divine nature to everyone. Nishant discovers Piya as his daughter, and Ansh learns about his half-demon self. Additionally, it is revealed that Mohana and Vedeshree are sisters with different fathers but share the same mother.

Piya's sister, Saavi, falls under Mohana's hypnosis and releases Dilruba, a chudel, to drive a wedge between Piya and Ansh. Dilruba casts a raakhchakra to ensnare Piya and Ansh, but Piya manages to save Ansh, becoming trapped herself. Ansh cleverly deceives Dilruba, breaking the hex and rescuing Piya. Mohana consents to Ansh and Piya's marriage and releases Divya, who is eventually revealed as a sarpika (serpent). Connecting the pieces, Divya discerns Mohana's ulterior motives. Mohana kills Divya, but Divya cunningly transfers her serpentine powers to Piya. Ansh and Piya tie the knot.

Piya learns of Mohana's true intention in wanting to feed on Ansh during the blood moon night, which is to attain immortality. Dilruba casts Piya into an everlasting sleep. Ansh succumbs to the dark side, becoming a powerful and self-centered Daavansh. He attempts to marry Dilruba, but Mohana rejects it, resulting in Piya's return. Using the trinetra-mani gem, powered by Shiva's third eye, Piya revives Ansh's awareness. She exposes Mohana's plan to the Rathods, leading to Ansh expelling Mohana. Following this, Piya and Ansh consummate their marriage.

Dola, the twin sister of Mohana and Ruby's mother, the ruler of the Swapna Lokh (Dream World) and a Dukayan (two-headed daayan), threatens to kill Ansh. The Rathods succeed in killing Dola, only for her to be resurrected by Mohana. They deceive Piya into transferring her serpentine powers to Ansh. Believing Piya is powerless, the sisters attempt to burn her with Tharal-agni, a Daayan fuel. Piya calls upon Devi-Maa for aid, regaining her divine powers. Mohana and Dola are petrified, later freed by Ruby. A Sarp hypnotizes Ansh and steals his serpentine powers, posing as him to target Piya's Trinetra-mani gem. Ansh and Piya unite their powers to vanquish the Sarp. During the blood moon night's muhurta, Mohana feeds on the serpent disguised as Ansh, becoming a Sarpayan with combined abilities.

Dola tells Mohana her horoscope, forecasting doom from Ansh's child. Meanwhile, the Rathods joyfully mark Piya's pregnancy. Ansh discovers Mohana's sinister plot to harm Piya and their unborn child. Regrettably, Ansh decides to part ways with Piya to ensure the baby's safety. Piya later gives birth in an old Shiva temple, where Mohana repeatedly attempts to kill the child but remains unsuccessful.

Six months later edit

Piya and Ansh witness their son, Aditya Rathod's supernatural powers. Mohana, relentless in her quest to kill Aditya, kidnaps him and attempts to push him off a cliff. Ansh saves Aditya, who, in turn, defeats Mohana with a trident. The Rathod family disposes of her ashes in a river. Vedashree's demeanor takes a dark turn as she becomes fond of heavy jewellery and things that a daayan appreciates. Piya grows suspicious and uncovers Vedashree's transformation into a daayan. Vedashree manages to convert Piya into a daayan, but Piya's divine strength prevails. She convinces Vedashree of her kindness, and Vedashree discards her daayan plait into the same river as Mohana's ashes.

Mohana, after obtaining a mermaid's body, seeks revenge to regain her plait. She tricks Piya into becoming a mermaid but faces the threat of returning to Kohra Lohk, the evil powers' graveyard. Mohana understands that only a Daivik can save her. In exchange for her help, Mohana aids Piya in returning to her human form. Shalaka, the queen of Kohra-Lohk poisons the Rathods and upon realising her mistake, she gives the Kohrayan dagger to Ansh which has the power to push a person back to their past life. Ansh stabs his family and himself sending everyone back to the past. Rathods travels two years back in time. Ansh touches Piya's earring and remembers everything. He finds Piya, makes her remember the past and the two reconcile. The Rathod returns to the present through a Pravesh Dwar.

Two years later edit

The Rathod family returns to the present, where Naman undergoes a transformation, training to become a Revavanshi. He marries Sanam, who turns out to be Dilruba. Ansh's life took an unexpected turn when he discovered he had a twin brother, Karan. Mohana had thrown Karan into Patal Ketki, believing he would die, but instead, the mystical substance of the Ketki now coursed through his veins, granting him magical powers despite his handicap. Manipulated by Mohana, Karan falsely believed that Divya had turned his wife, Maansi, and their child, Krish, into stone statues. Driven by vengeance, Karan sought the Rathods' help to rescue his family, concealing the fact that Piya and Aditya would turn to stone. Piya, however, remained skeptical of Karan, knowing Divya would never harm the innocent. Eventually, Nishant and Ansh unraveled Karan's true motives, but they couldn't save Piya and Aditya. With his magical wings, Karan incapacitated Ansh. It was then revealed that Maansi was a Daayan under Mohana's control, sent to obtain Karan's wings. In a heartbreaking decision, Karan turned Maansi, Krish, and himself into stone to save Piya and Aditya, leaving Ansh in despair. Before his sacrifice, Karan transferred his magical wings to Ansh.

The Rathod family joyfully celebrates Adi's first birthday. However, Mohana, using dark magic, manipulates Vedashree like a puppet to fulfill her sinister motives. Vedashree attempts to damage Piya's reputation, especially in the eyes of Ansh. Piya accidentally pushes Vedashree off the terrace, leading to her hospitalization. Mohana seizes this opportunity to transfer Vedashree's life force into a mystical "Praan-Pyala." She then threatens Piya, demanding that she leave the Rathod family, thus shattering Ansh's heart.Piya complies and departs from the house, leaving Aditya behind. Nishant and Saavi follow Mohana and discover that the Praan-Pyala is concealed on a mysterious island floating in the sky. Mohana agrees to return Aditya to Piya but cunningly leaves one of Piya's earrings in Ansh's room to mislead him. Furious and misled, Ansh confronts Nishant to reclaim Adi, only to realize Piya's innocence. Ansh and Piya eventually reach the Daayan island, but Mohana escapes with Vedashree's Praan Pyala. Piya sacrifices a portion of her own life to save Vedashree but weakens as a result. Nishant introduces his sister, Trishila, a Revavanshi with the power to resurrect the dead. Trishila pledges to save Piya, though Ansh remains suspicious of her true motives. Ansh later discovers Trishila's true mission: to revive Divya, in a bid to eradicate evil forces forever.

Divya creates a sword named Pralay-Talvar, unaware of its dire consequences. An eerie voice warns Divya and Mohana that unleashing Pralay-Talvar will spark a celestial clash – the Pralay Yuddh – pitting Divya's divine forces against Mohana's malevolent powers. The first to bleed will be vanquished, and their entire clan will face extinction. The Rathods discover the impending war and endeavor to prevent it. Ansh and Piya attempt to destroy the sword but fail. To save a poisoned Ansh and incite the battle, Divya selflessly sacrifices herself, igniting the Pralay Yuddh. The war commences, with supernatural malevolence aligned against the Revavanshis, Rathods, and Ansh. In tribute to her mother's sacrifice, Piya transforms into the Mahakali avatar, obliterating the evil forces and vowing to protect the world. Mohana escapes, leaving the other malevolent to get burned to death. After regaining her senses, Piya regrets not supporting Divya and comprehends her actions were for the future's benefit. Piya cremates Divya and, with Ansh, sacrifice their powers to lead a normal life, diminishing Adi's powers. However, Piya still wields her powers inadvertently, causing friction with Ansh, who believes she didn't sacrifice her powers willingly. Frustrated by Ansh's accusations, Piya leaves the house. She later discovers she is pregnant and realizes her powers stem from her unborn child. Piya seeks to confess to Ansh but is denied a chance. Heartbroken, she returns to Guru Maa's care.

Six years later edit

Ansh and Piya, residing apart with their children Aditya and Pari, grapple with Pari's extraordinary daayan abilities. A sinister entity, Bhasmika, created by Mohana, wields the combined powers of evil forces. Named Urvashi, the creature infiltrates the Rathod family, seeking marriage to Ansh. While Adi discerns Urvashi's true nature, he faces torment from others despite his insight.

Piya brings Pari to Mumbai for her studies, where Aditya and Pari befriend each other. Discovering they are siblings, they unite to reconcile their estranged parents. During Ganesh Chaturthi, Urvashi mistakenly kidnaps Pari, leading Piya to return to the Rathod household after six years, demanding her daughter's release. The Rathods eventually learn that Pari is the daughter of Piya and Ansh. Mohana is captured by the Rathods in the same temple at Bhandap. Aditya exposes Urvashi's true form, and he and Pari are taken to a remote island. Ansh and Piya regain their powers, joining forces with their children to defeat Urvashi and return to the Rathod home.

The Rathod family wants Ansh and Piya's reunion. However, Piya hesitates due to Ansh's mistrust, her six-year separation from Aditya, and being abandoned during her pregnancy. Meanwhile, the spirit of Bhasmika emerges from the ashes, possessing Piya to get intimate with Ansh. Ansh discerns the possession, using the divine dagger to vanquish Bhasmika. Bhasmika accomplishes her aims, creating a pearl and departing, as Piya's soul ascends to Namah Lohk. Shiva and Narayan invite her to ascend to heaven, but she hesitates. Ansh sacrifices himself, reaching Namah Lok, where he faces a test of his love from the Gods and retrieves Piya's soul. Ansh and Piya reunite, and the family rejoices, marking Pari and Vedashree's shared birthday.

Mohana, having drained Bhasmika's life force, reverts to her daayan form and absorbs Bhasmika's powers. Nishant, Naman, and Saavi discover the pearl has transformed into an egg. While Nishant and Saavi attend Pari and Vedashree's birthday party, Naman guards the egg. However, when Naman accidentally illuminates it, the egg takes flight. Desperate to catch it, he scalds his hands and loses his hearing. Under Mohana's spell, Pari aids her escape with the egg's dark energies. Mohana whisks the egg off to its right place to hatch., furthering her sinister agenda. The world's first Ekayaan, Prathmayan / Prathima, emerges from her egg, who is the of Vedashree, Mohana, and Dola. She is the origin of all malevolent forces in the world, driven by her primary aim to transform her younger daughter, Vedashree, into an Ekayaan, instead of her cunning and shrewd elder daughter, Mohana, who poses a significant threat. To accomplish her sinister goal, she seeks to vanquish the goodness represented by Goddess Durga during Dussehra. Pratima, Mohana, and Pari unite to amass an army of humans, empowered by the Prathmayan mantra. Even Naman falls under Prathmayan's sway until Nishant devises an antidote to counter the mantra's effects. Naman and Pari break free from the enchantment, joining their family in the battle against Prathmayan. Piya invokes divine energy to invoke Goddess Durga's blessings and employs a Rama Setu arrow, crafted from information found in Divya's diary, to vanquish Prathmayan.

After Prathmayan's departure, Piya struggles to repair her divine dagger. She submerges it in water, and miraculously, another Daivik Dev fixes it. Dev sneaks into the Rathod House during Ansh and Piya's anniversary celebrations, disguised as Ruchi's (Piya's cousin) fiancé. His obsession with Piya leads him to implant the Daivik Raksha Dravya on her, preventing Ansh and Piya from getting close. On Karva Chauth, Dev attacks Ansh and leaves him for dead. He hypnotizes the family to gain permission to marry Piya, promising to save Ansh. Mohana intervenes, rescuing Ansh and aiding Piya. Dev attempts to enslave Piya by tying a Kalasutra around her neck. In a cunning move, Piya outsmarts Dev, turning him into an ice statue. Ansh and Piya return safely with their children on Diwali. As a token of gratitude, Mohana gets an opportunity to re-enter the Rathod's house for her help in saving Ansh and Piya.

During Diwali, Chaitali visits her new neighbors, unaware that one of them is Vedashree's twin sister, Kalashree, a daayan. Kalashree's sinister plan is to join forces with Vedashree, forming a daayanjod or a mahadaayan. Mohana repeatedly attempts to alert the Rathod family about the daayan in their midst, but her warnings fall on deaf ears, resulting in her imprisonment within a Patal Ketki dome. Kalashree, unsuccessful in persuading Vedashree, targets the Rathod family, trapping them within a daayan mirror. Only Aditya and Pari escape this fate, and Vedashree discovers her twin sister's malevolent actions. With a Daayan gem acquired from Mohana, Aditya, Pari, and Nishant rescue the family from the mirror. Vedashree, who reluctantly agreed to Kalashree's demands, is reduced to ashes. Mohana cautions the Rathods to dispose of the ash, but they hope to resurrect Vedashree. Meanwhile, Naman transforms into a chudail and faces challenges to maintain his status as a Reevavanshi. Saavi assigns him the task of capturing an evil force, leading Dilruba to misinterpret Naman's feelings for Saavi.

Nishant finds Kalashree's quest for Prathmaayan's vow, the key to her transformation into a mahadaayan, delivered through Prathmaayan's hair. Piya and Mohana thwarts the birth of the mahadaayan. Mohana aids the Rathods in resurrecting Vedashree, requesting their support for her love with Angad, unaware of his true identity. Angad, a Singha, a natural enemy of supernatural beings, sparks Mohana's deep love and transformation into a better person. Ansh on learning Angad's intentions, kills him on the day of her wedding to protect Mohana and rathids. Angad's demise traumatizes Mohana, driving her back to the dark side, vowing vengeance against Ansh. Despite Ansh's sacrifice, Mohana cunningly transfers Pari's life force into a Praan-Pyaala. Ansh and Piya, with Dilruba's help, rescue Pari after Dafli's birth. Unfortunately, Mohana mixed her blood in the Praan-Pyaala which allows her to live inside Pari.

In a vengeful plot within the Rathod household, Mohana successfully injures Vedashree while framing Piya for the act. Consequently, Piya finds herself arrested by CBI officer Abhay. Meanwhile, Naman is astounded to uncover his newborn daughter, Dalfi's supernatural abilities. Ansh intervenes to rescue Piya from her incarceration, hosting a Christmas party at home where he reveals the truth to Abhay. A startling twist unfolds when Barkha, Mohana's doppelgänger, makes an unexpected entrance, leaving everyone in shock. Nishant becomes privy to Mohana's quest for the elusive "2 Chaand Raat Ras" potion, which can only be obtained during a night with two moons. The Rathods and Reevavanshiis place their trust in Barkha and lay a trap for Mohana, but the plan goes awry as she eliminates both Abhay and Barkha, making off with the potion.

Mohana cunningly deceives Ansh into consuming the potion, further amplifying his malevolence as the King of Evil Powers. Piya's long-lost brother, Ayush, also known as Adrishi, unexpectedly makes his entrance. With Adrishi's aid, Piya manages to restore Ansh to his senses, but the elixir corrupts Ayush, plunging him into darkness. Mohana and Ayush form a sinister alliance, plotting the Rathods' death. Their scheme involves banishing the Rathods to the moon, but Ayush regains his sanity, recognizing Mohana's ulterior motives. He forcibly transports Mohana to the moon, where she eventually escapes but loses her mental stability. Piya undergoes a transformation, becoming a Visharika (Plant Powers Daayan).

Seizing the opportunity of Piya's power loss, the Rathods attempt to heal her, but Mohana regains her abilities and uncovers a prophecy of her impending death at the hands of Ansh. She tricks Piya into promising to help kill her murderer, who is Ansh, in exchange to leave their lives forever. At the end, Mohana discloses Ansh as her murderer. Ansh sacrifices himself to rescue Piya from Mohana's lava trap. As Mohana becomes the witches' queen, Ansh and Piya return from the dead, and Ansh defeats Mohana. Finally, the reunited family rejoices.

She makes this difficult choice to secure the money required to cover her sister Naina's hospital bills. As time passes, an unexpected and genuine love blossoms between them. Meanwhile, Apurv's sinister sister, Madhulika, a daayan, harbors sinister intentions to sacrifice Apurv during the upcoming Purnima night, aiming to attain an Ekayan status. She has killed everyone who found out the truth about her. She has repeatedly stopped Apurv's marriage attempts, but her plans fail when she encounters Palak's divine powers that disrupt her malevolent pursuits. This series was originally planned for 100 episodes, but the positive response to the series extended its run.[15] In August 2019, the storyline of the series took a leap of six years.[16]

In the first week of February 2020, producer Gul Khan confirmed the end of season 1 and production of season 2 of the series.[3] On 14 February 2020, the teaser of season 2 was released featuring Antara Biswas.[17] Later, the promo featuring Antara Biswas and Sheezan Khan was released.[18]

Due to COVID-19 outbreak, on 19 March 2020 the shootings were stalled until 31 March 2020 before lockdown was announced.[19] However, on 25 March 2020 lockdown was announced for 21 days then was extended till 3 May and again extended and the shootings could not resume after it.[20][21] On 20 March 2020, the series was halted airing and was supposed to return after lockdown. But, as the lockdown was extended longer than expected and shootings were stalled indefinitely. In May 2020 the series' cancellation was confirmed. It was due to the high budget of the series causing losses. On 10 October 2021, The series came back as a telefilm with a new plot and twists under the title Ankahee Daastaan-Nazar which was telecasted on 10 October 2021.[citation needed]

Reception edit

Critical response edit

India Today stated, "Although there is no dearth of chudails, dayans and shaitans in Indian TV, Gul's dayan stands apart. The character is loud and over the top, but is well-written and has a fascinating back story. Mona Lisa as Mohona is impressive, and the show is able to hold the interest of the viewer despite being a daily."[22]

After its premiere, it received negative criticism from The Times of India which stated, "Right from the beginning to the end, the show fails to hold you as it is highly dramatic, and the background music adds to the woes. The railway station, the forest and the havelis are typical elements used in a supernatural thriller. They bring no novelty. The plot is incoherent as the background of the characters is not explained well. The show is painfully slow, the story is patchy and so are the scenes. Dialogues are retro and filmy. The list can go on. Monalisa and Harsh Rajput disappoint as actors. They play their parts with zero efficiency. The supporting cast is again average at its best."[23]

However, speaking about the success of the series, The Times of India stated, "The majority of the scenes are shot using chroma and the makers add special effects that add to the quality of the episodes. The makers have made a make-believe world with Mohana's story and it's quite an enchanting and exciting one just like your dadima's childhood 'evil vs good' stories".[24]

Ratings edit

The first season opened to a TRP of 1.8 and 4.2 million impressions featuring in top 20 shows.[25]

editCritical response edit India Today stated Although there is no dearth of chudails dayans and shaitans in Indian TV Gul s dayan stands apart The character is loud and over the top but is well written and has a fascinating back story Mona Lisa as Mohona is impressive and the show is able to hold the interest of the viewer despite being a daily 22 After its premiere it received negative criticism from The Times of India which stated Right from the beginning to the end the show fails to hold you as it is highly dramatic and the background music adds to the woes The railway station the forest and the havelis are typical elements used in a supernatural thriller They bring no novelty The plot is incoherent as the background of the characters is not explained well The show is painfully slow the story is patchy and so are the scenes Dialogues are retro and filmy The list can go on Monalisa and Harsh Rajput disappoint as actors They play their parts with zero efficiency The supporting cast is again average at its best 23 However speaking about the success of the series The Times of India stated The majority of the scenes are shot using chroma and the makers add special effects that add to the quality of the episodes The makers have made a make believe world with Mohana s story and it s quite an enchanting and exciting one just like your dadima s childhood evil vs good stories 24 Ratings edit The first season opened to a TRP of 1 8 and 4 2 million impressions featuring in top 20 shows 25 Soundtrack editNazarOriginal Sound TrackSoundtrack album by Sanjeev SrivastavaReleased17
