It premiered on AT-X between April and July 2014, and was simulcast outside Japan by Crunchyroll. An anime film adaptation of the sixth volume, No Game, No Life Zero, premiered on July 15, 2017. A spinoff manga, No Game No Life, Please!, focusing on the character Izuna, ran from May 27, 2015, to November 27, 2017. The No Game No Life franchise was localized in North America by several companies: Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the manga, Sentai Filmworks the anime, and Yen Press the light novel series.

The series follows Sora and his younger stepsister Shiro, two hikikomori who make up the identity of Blank, an undefeated group of gamers. One day, they are challenged by the god of games to chess and are victorious. As a result, the god summons them to Disboard, a world where stealing, war, and killing are forbidden, and all matters are decided through games, including national borders and even people's lives. Intent on maintaining their reputation as the undefeated gamers, Sora and Shiro plan to conquer the sixteen ruling species and to usurp the god of games.

The series began receiving recognition in 2014, when it appeared in Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! and had its volumes placed as one of the top thirty selling novels in Japan. It was reported in May 2017 that over 3 million printed copies are in circulation. The English localization of the manga and anime were also well received: the manga adaptation appeared on The New York Times Manga Best Sellers; meanwhile, English reviewers were generally turned away by the first episode of the anime, though reviewers who have completed the series generally praised the character dynamics, game strategies, and animation, while disliking the fan service featuring the underage Shiro.

Plot

Sora and Shiro are two hikikomori stepsiblings who are known in the online gaming world as Blank, an undefeated group of gamers. One day, they are challenged to a game of chess by Tet, a god from another reality. The two are victorious and are offered to live in a world that centers around games. They accept, believing it to be a joke, and are summoned to a reality known as Disboard.[Jp. 1] There, a spell known as the Ten Covenants prevents the citizens of Disboard from inflicting harm on one another, forcing them to resolve their differences by gambling with games whose rules and rewards are magically enforced. In-game, rule enforcement only occurs when the method of cheating is acknowledged and outed by the opponent, allowing players to cheat through discreet methods. Sora and Shiro traverse to Elkia,[Jp. 2] the nation inhabited by humans, and befriend the duchess Stephanie Dola. Learning about Elkia's decline, the two participate in a tournament to determine the next ruler; after winning the crown, they earn the right to challenge the Disboard's other species as humanity's representative.LN 1.4 Their next goal is to conquer all sixteen species in order to challenge Tet to a game; as of the sixth volume, five of the sixteen are under their control.[needs update]

Characters

Main characters

Sora () and Shiro ()
Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Sora), Ai Kayano (Shiro) (Japanese); Scott Gibbs (Sora), Caitlynn French (Shiro)[3] (English)
Sora and Shiro are the main protagonists of the series and are stepsiblings. While Sora is an eighteen-year-old boy who excels at strategies and cold readings, Shiro is an eleven-year-old girl who excels at calculations and logic.LN 3.0 The two form the undefeated gaming identity Blank (空白, Kūhaku, stylized as『 』) due to their trademark of using only spaces as their in-game names. After their parents died, the two no longer had emotional ties to society and eventually became agoraphobic hikikomori.LN 1.0 When the two are separated from each other, they begin to suffer panic attacks.LN 1.1 After Sora and Shiro are summoned to Disboard, they decide to uphold their undefeated reputation as Blank by defeating Tet. A 2014 poll by Charapedia ranked Shiro and Sora as two of the most intelligent anime characters of all time.[4]

Supporting characters

Stephanie Dola (ステファニー・ドーラ, Sutefanī Dōra)
Voiced by: Yoko Hikasa[5] (Japanese); Sara Ornelas[3] (English)
Stephanie is a teenage girl and granddaughter to the previous king of Elkia, the nation inhabited by humans. She has a lot of explicit knowledge. Unlike Sora and Shiro, she lacks the intuition to win games.LN 2.1 Her grandfather was infamous for recklessly losing games and giving up almost all of Elkia's land for seemingly nothing in return. Consequently, Stephanie strives to restore the honor of her grandfather and humanity. When Sora and Shiro are crowned king and queen of Elkia, she becomes their assistant and handles Elkia's economics and politics behind the scenes. They later discover that her grandfather kept hidden records on the other species' games. These records become critical to their victories.LN 2.3 Eventually, her experience with Sora and Shiro improves her skill to the point that she can win games against almost all normal humans.LN 4.1 She has a pivotal role in the game between the Commonwealth of Elkia and Holou, accompanying Sora and Shiro throughout the entire game and risking her life alongside them, even through the minigame with Jibril.LN 8.2 However, it is revealed that the Steph accompanying the two of them in that game is actually a clone, created by the Old Deus to be passed off as a "traitor"; the real Steph waited in the Eastern Union through most of that game before delivering Laila to the side-game between Ino Hatsuse, Plum, Chlammy and Fiel.LN 8.3 Although she takes pride in the fact that Sora and Shiro only prevented her from playing in the Old Deus game due to her trustworthiness, she still feels jealous that she had to miss out.
Jibril (ジブリール, Jiburīru)
Voiced by: Yukari Tamura[5] (Japanese); Amelia Fischer[3] (English)
Jibril is a Flügel,[Jp. 3] a powerful angelic race known for their ruthlessness.LN 2.1 Jibril is over 6,000 years old and is the youngest and most powerful of her species.LN 5.2 Towards the end of the ancient Great War, she encountered and fought an Ex-Machina named Schwi, whose strange actions she was unable to comprehend at that time; due to this, she overexerted herself and thus was not present for the final battle.LN 6.4 Since then, unsatisfied with Flügel's stagnation and curious about many things (such as the strange happenings at the end of the War), she fled her homeland;LN 5.3 she won Elkia's library from Stephanie's grandfather and uses it to store her books and as a home.LN 2.2 After losing to Sora and Shiro in a game of materialization word chain, she becomes their slave, but is treated as an equal.LN 2.2 She often provides magic or transportation for the protagonists. Later on, she begins publishing novels based on Sora and Shiro, which makes them famous among the Flügel.LN 5.1 Although she continually rebuffs her elder Azril's affection for her and claims she considers her a nuisance, she risks her life to attempt to get Azril to understand the true reason for Flügel's loss in the war, even bluffing for the first time in her life.LN 5.2 She enters the game against an Old Deus alongside Sora and Shiro, intending on using the game's unique rules to force her masters into a simulation of the Great War;LN 8.1 however, she panics and becomes desperate upon realizing that a quirk in the game's rules is causing her to lose her memory, even forgetting entirely about Sora and Shiro. Distraught and terrified, she forces the two plus Steph into her game with a penalty of death for the loser, intending to discover the secrets behind the end of the War before her death,LN 7.E although she despises herself for doing so. Still, Sora and Shiro outmaneuver her in her game, convincing her that it's okay to be afraid but not acceptable to sacrifice someone, and accomplishing a default - losing the task in the Old Deus game by timing out in Jibril's game, and leaving Jibril vacantly happy yet mostly memoryless for a time.LN 8.2 Since her game with them became Blank's first true loss in a game, she has doubled down on her efforts to be useful to them, being remorseful of her actionsLN 9.3 and insecure about her place at their side,LN 9.2 although they do not blame her, only having chagrin at losing.LN 8.2

Chlammy Zell (クラミー・ツェル, Kuramī Tseru) and Fiel Nirvalen (フィール・ニルヴァレン, Fīru Niruvaren)
Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi (Chlammy), Mamiko Noto (Fiel)[5] (Japanese); Kara Greenberg (Chlammy), Christina Stroup (Fiel)[3] (English)
Chlammy is an eighteen-year-old girl and considered the slave of the Elf, Fiel. Chlammy appears cold and cunning, but she is actually a bit of a crybaby. Though Chlammy's family were the Nirvalen family's slaves for generations, her relationship with Fiel is similar to daughter and mother.LN 3.2 Meanwhile, Fiel is considered a failure of a magician but is secretly highly skilled.LN 5.0 She is willing to betray Elven Gard,[Jp. 4] the nation inhabited by Elves, for Chlammy's sake; the two conspire to have Fiel obtain a political position of power in order to abolish slavery.LN 3.2 Chlammy attempts to take control of the human nation of Elkia as part of this plan, although despite employing Elven magic to cheat, Sora and Shiro still defeat her to take the throne themselves.LN 1.3 Upon hearing that Sora and Shiro plan to bet the human Race Piece[Jp. 5] (a chess piece representing all of the rights of a race under the Ten Covenants) in a game, Chlammy challenges Sora to another game with their respective memories on the line; Sora wins, managing to convince Chlammy to be his ally by sharing his memories with her.LN 3.1 After striving to undermine a single state of Elven Gard,LN 5.0 Chlammy and Fiel blockade the Eastern Union in order to interfere with Elkia's game with Holou.LN 7.3 They attempt to use the Shrine Maiden's temporary absence to take control of the Eastern Union, although Plum turns their plan to his own benefit for a time,7.4 and ultimately they are forced to enter a game at a disadvantage due to the timely arrival of Laila forcing Plum to cooperate with the Eastern Union.8.2 Plum's magic, temporarily uninhibited due to Holou, overpowers Fiel's while Ino defeats Chlammy with his Blood Break in their game.8.3 Due to their loss, Chlammy and Fiel's state of Elven Gard comes under control of the Commonwealth of Elkia and Sora reveals that he betrayed their treason to the Elves, causing the two to join Elkia.LN 8.E

Werebeasts

The Werebeasts[Jp. 6] are an animal-eared race with high physical abilities; their nation is known as the Eastern Union[Jp. 7].

Shrine Maiden (巫女, Miko)
Voiced by: Naomi Shindo[6] (Japanese); Suzelle Palacios[3] (English)
The Shrine Maiden is the nameless representative of the Werebeasts and ruler over the Eastern Union. She is a logical woman who helped the Eastern Union flourish for the past fifty years.LN 3.4 She possesses a rare ability called Blood Break, which augments her physical abilities by taxing her body. She allies herself with Sora and Shiro, who promise benefits for humanity and Werebeasts.LN 3.4 In her youth, Werebeasts inhabited disparate tribes and fought constantly against each other; her own name was lost forever when her Golden Fox tribe was defeated.LN 7.0 Seeking to put an end to the Werebeasts' infighting, she tricked and bound an Old Deus (later her first friend and ally) inside her body, and went on to unite the Werebeast tribes into the Eastern Union;LN 8.4 unable to wield the Old Deus's powers directly, she instead channeled them as a power source for the nation's advanced technology.LN 7.3 Although she used to dream of creating a world without violence, as she grew up she became disillusioned and gave up on her dream until she meets Sora and Shiro, who she believes could actually finish her dream. Trusting in them, she tricks and defeats the Old Deus again, forcing her into a game with Sora and Shiro,LN 8.4 in which the Shrine Maiden is apparently killed; however, the Old Deus keeps her alive throughout by maintaining her soul with magic.LN 7.2 Although the Old Deus is defeated, joins the Commonwealth of Elkia, and yet still considers the Shrine Maiden important to her, the Shrine Maiden feels somewhat guilty and unworthy of the god in light of her betrayals.LN 8.E
Izuna Hatsuse (初瀬 いづな, Hatsuse Izuna)
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro[5] (Japanese); Kira Vincent-Davis[3] (English)
Izuna is an eight-year-old child who is the ambassador of the Kingdom of Elkia.LN 2.4 She has a childlike demeanor and mistakenly assumes the copula desu (alternatively, the adverb please) itself makes a sentence polite, and says it at the end of every sentence regardless of the sentence's actual politeness. She also possesses high intellect and is capable of using Blood Break.LN 3.3 Following the alliance between humans and Werebeasts, she is a constant companion to Sora and Shiro, whom she adores and trusts. She aids Steph in discovering the true rules for Laila's game, using her enhanced senses and her Blood Break to quickly identify books relating to the Siren.LN 5.3 While preparing for their next game, Izuna stumbles across Tet - collapsed on the ground in urban Elkia, under the guise of a human - and listens to him as he tells her the story of Riku, Schwi, and the end of the ancient great war.LN 6.0 She is then a major player in the game with HolouLN 7.1 and is actually the first to advance to the home stretch,LN 7.E although she is unable to answer Holou's question and thus is unable to finish the game.LN 8.2
Ino Hatsuse (初瀬 いの, Hatsuse Ino)
Voiced by: Mugihito[6] (Japanese); John Swasey[3] (English)
Ino is Izuna's grandfather.LN 2.4 He is a former politician and has been a key ally to the Shrine Maiden for many years, although he never realized the secret behind her strength until much later.LN 7.3 He believes Sora has selfish ulterior motives, disliking and distrusting him; he also tends to be adversarial with beings of other races in general, especially Jibril, with whom the Werebeast race had clashed in the past. After the alliance between humans and Werebeasts, he works alongside Stephanie to formalize the Commonwealth of Elkia, bonding with her over their shared misfortune at the hands of Sora and Shiro.LN 4.1 He provides assistance during the game with Laila at Oceand, utilizing his idiosyncratic ways with women to attempt to seduce her; however, he fails, falling under control of the Sirens.LN 4.4 After being rescued from Oceand, he participates in the game against Holou, although once he sees that the Shrine Maiden has apparently died at the start of the game, he loses all control, failing to grasp the hidden points in the game's rules and instead going on a single-minded crusade against Sora, who he blames for her "death".LN 7.1 He eventually realizes the extent of his failure, after which he intentionally loses in order to aid Sora, Shiro and Steph.LN 7.3 However, losing does not kill him like he expected, but causes him to continue existing as a ghost; in this form he is accosted by Fiel and Chlammy, who threaten him into a game, staking a state of Elven Gard for the entire Eastern Union.LN 7.3 Plum also intervenes in this game in order to win concessions for Dhampir, but his plan is overturned and he and Ino together achieve victory over Chlammy and Fiel, causing Ino to regard Plum as a proper ally for the first time.LN 8.3

Dhampirs and Sirens

Dhampirs[Jp. 8] are a species with similar characteristics to vampires: they drink body fluids from other species for nourishment; excel at transformation, illusion, and dream magic; and are weak to sunlight. Their weakness to sunlight can be spread through bites which deters the other species from sharing blood with them.LN 4.0 Meanwhile, Sirens[Jp. 9] are an all female species with the body of a mermaid. They require the life of a male from another species in order to reproduce; their magic allows them to seduce anyone of their choosing. Both species live in a nation called Oceand[Jp. 10]. Centuries ago, the Dhampirs and Sirens used the Ten Covenants to create a mutual relationship between the two; the dhampirs were allowed to feed on the sirens and in return, a male Dhampir is to mate with the queen of the Sirens who can reproduce without killing. Eight hundred years prior, the queen went into hibernation and the mating rituals killed all but a single male Dhampir.LN 4.1

Plum Stoker (プラム・ストーカー, Puramu Sutōkā)
Plum is the last living male Dhampir and their leader, and he disguises himself as a female as a result;LN 5.4 his magic skills are considered above average within his species.LN 5.2 After consuming Sora and Shiro's sweat, he becomes fond of their taste. He makes a deal with the Sirens to lure Sora and Shiro in an attempt to have one of the two races enslave humanity. Sora and Shiro deduce his deception but decide to save both races regardless.LN 5.4 Since then, he has sometimes accompanied Sora and Shiro on their adventures. Alongside the two of them, Ino, Izuna, Jibril and Steph, he visits the Eastern Union capital to challenge an Old Deus to a game;LN 6.E although he becomes unable to finish the game due to it requiring extensive travel across open terrain in broad daylight, his soul is maintained by the Old Deus and thus he does not die from losing, instead persisting as a ghost with unlimited access to his magical powers. He uses his magic to intervene in the side-game between Ino and the team of Chlammy and Fiel, forcing both parties into the game despite also upping the ante in an attempt to gain a foothold for the Dhampir race from which they might seek emancipation from the Sirens.LN 7.4 However, then Laila arrives at their game, forcing Plum to retract his demands and fight with Ino for the Eastern Union, since he is unable to sacrifice Laila without dooming his own race.LN 8.2 Despite his plans being crushed by Sora and Shiro's machinations once again, he fights for the Eastern Union and is victorious, overpowering Fiel in a magic battle.LN 8.3

Laila Lorelei (ライラ・ローレライ, Raira Rōrerai) and Amila (アミラ, Amira)
Laila is the queen of the Sirens who used the Ten Covenants to put herself to sleep without revealing the requirements to wake her up. While Laila sleeps, Amila takes her place in leading the Sirens.LN 4.2 Realizing that Laila is a masochist who desires an unrequited love, Sora's immunity to the Sirens' seduction magic allows him to awaken her.LN 5.4 Subsequently, Laila used Sora's hair to create a Siren daughter.LN 5.5 Laila later lends Sora the Siren Race Piece to bet against Holou in a game, during which Laila herself is smuggled into the Eastern Union and introduced to Ino, Plum, Chlammy and Fiel; her mere presence overturns their planned game, causing Plum's self-serving plan to collapse.LN 8.2

Other characters

Tet (テト, Teto), Riku Dola (リク・ドーラ, Riku Dōra) and Schwi Dola (シュヴィ・ドーラ, Syuvi Dōra)
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya[5] (Japanese); Shannon Emerick[3] (English)
Tet is an Old Deus,[Jp. 11] a magical entity born from wishes and prayers. During the era when the sixteen species were at war with each other, a human named Riku Dola and his Ex-Machina[Jp. 12] wife, Schwi Dola, imagined the existence of a god of games; this resulted in Tet's birth. Due to Riku's efforts, Tet comes into possession of an object known as the Suniaster[Jp. 13], allowing him to become the god of Disboard. Using its power, Tet cast the Ten Covenants on the world, ending the war and making the world centered around games.LN 6.5

Azril (アズリール, Azurīru) and Avant Heim (アヴァント・ヘイム, Avanto Heimu)
Voiced by: Yui Horie (Japanese); Juliet Simmons (English)
Azril is the first Flügel and their leader following the death of Artosh,[Jp. 14] the Old Deus who created them. Since then, Azril has become despondent towards life and tries to give meaning to the Flügel's existence to prevent their suicide, although she continues to adore her youngest surviving sister, Jibril.LN 5.2 She is able to converse with the Flügel's homeland, a sentient floating island called Avant Heim which is part of a species called the Phantasma.[Jp. 15]LN 5.1 Following her loss against Sora and Shiro, her powers are reduced to the levels of a human which gives her a new perspective on life.LN 5.3 She later willingly lends the Flügel Race Piece out for Jibril to bet in the game against Holou.LN 8.E
Holou (帆楼, Horō)
An Old Deus and apparently the God of Doubt, she was the first and oldest conscious being in the world and thus had no name. She was born to question everything but never found any answers, not even after creating a race (the Ex-Machina) to help her quest for knowledge. Eventually she denied everything including herself and gouged herself of her Ether[Jp. 16] (her quintessence as a god), which came loose. Instead of killing her, this rendered her inert until the modern era, where she was found by a young Shrine Maiden who tricked her and beat her in a game, binding her Ether in the body of the Shrine Maiden. Since then, she has unintentionally become a source of inspiration and support for the Shrine Maiden.LN 8.4 She occasionally interacts remotely with Tet, doubtfully questioning his motives and intentions.LN 2.0 Sora, Shiro and company utilize the Shrine Maiden's cooperation to unbind the Old Deus and challenge her to a game, wherein she emotionlessly imparts the rules at the start and then vanishes.LN 7.0 Holding the soul of the apparently-deceased Shrine Maiden, she reprimands her for apparently having deceived a god, not understanding what the Shrine Maiden sees in Sora and Shiro.LN 7.2 During the game she appears before players who reach the game's final task, to show them the futility of the game and to emotionlessly wait for their answer;LN 7.E in doing so, she betrays her doubt in Sora and Shiro and her frustration at their progress.LN 8.2 After their victory she reacts with visible emotion for the first time, frustrated and confused, and attempts to hide herself from the world.LN 8.3 With her Ether coming loose again, Sora and Shiro watch her past through her ebbing powers; they convince her that she is not actually the god of doubt, proclaiming her instead the God of Wisdom[Jp. 17], and naming her Holou (from "hollow", a pun on their own names and of Blank).LN 8.4 Finally accepting herself and her lack of knowledge, she joins Elkia and makes amends with the Shrine Maiden; she intends to cooperate with Sora and Shiro's plan to make her into both an idol and the self-declared representative of the Old Deus. She then declares her intentions directly to Tet, who thanks her for being born (her being the creator of Schwi's race), but he also makes her properly angry for the first time by defeating her in chess.LN 8.E

Publication and conception

No Game No Life is a light novel series written and illustrated by Yuu Kamiya. It is published under the MF Bunko J imprint; twelve volumes were published by Media Factory between April 25, 2012 and February 25, 2023.[7][8] In August 2014, Yen Press announced No Game No Life will be one of its titles published under its newly launched imprint, Yen On, in 2015.[9] Non-English localizations include Brazil, Taiwan and Russia.[10][11][12] Distribution in China was banned due to the government viewing the series as a threat to communism,[13] while the Australian Classification Board banned the selling or importing of volumes 1, 2, and 9 in Australia for containing content that is "likely to cause offence to a reasonable adult".[14]

No Game No Life was conceived during the serialization of A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives.LN 1.A Kamiya's original idea was a fantasy setting with battles; since he disliked drawing battles, he replaced it with games. He had intended to turn the idea into a manga series, but an unspecified illness made him unfit to handle the workload. While hospitalized for treatment, the author imagined how his idea would work as a light novel, and settled for that medium instead.LN 1.A Kamiya began writing the first volume and was advised to break it into three parts due to its length.LN 2.A In the middle of writing the second volume, Kamiya moved to his home country, Brazil, for further treatment for his ailment; in order to meet the volume's deadline, his wife drew some of the illustrations in the novel.LN 2.A

After the third volume, a new editor was assigned to the series.LN 3.A Kamiya noted the third volume contained a lot of plot progression, and was going to balance it out in the fourth volume with more lighthearted and carefree events.LN 3.A Volumes four and five were written as a single volume; since volume four lacked a climactic ending, Kamiya had to restructure the story.LN 4.A This, along with communication problems with his new editor, and other problems in Kamiya's life caused a month delay in volume four's release.LN 4.A After completing volume five, Kamiya was asked to submit volume six's manuscript before 2014 for the anime adaptation, and to complete the volume before the anime's premiere.LN 5.A, 6.A

Shiro begins to doubt Sora's existence but learns she and her friends have a gap in their memory. Straining herself, Shiro recalls that Sora arranged a game of Othello with Chlammy and her Elf comrade Fiel Nirvalen; the components making up Sora and Chlammy's identity were used as the pieces. Sora's three remaining pieces were Shiro's memories of him, allowing her to resume and win the game. Having seen each other's memories, Sora convinces Chlammy to ally herself with him. The game against the Eastern Union begins and Sora, Shiro, Stephanie, and Jibril enter a virtual shooter against the Werebeast, Izuna Hatsuse, where they are eventually victorious. As a result, Elkia gains a large mass of land and rights to the Werebeasts occupying them. Sora and Shiro use political pressure to force the leader of the Eastern Union, the nameless Shrine Maiden, to challenge them; the game is a coin flip where Sora arranges to have it land on its edge. He convinces the Shrine Maiden to declare they both win and as a result, Elkia can share resources with the Eastern Union while the Werebeasts maintain their self-rule; they name the unionized colony between Elkia and the Eastern Union as the Commonwealth of Elkia.

A Dhampir named Plum Stoker visits Sora and Shiro, and asks them to save his species. He explains the queen of the Sirens, Laila Lorelei, put herself to sleep using the Ten Covenants centuries ago and as a result, the once mutualistic relationship between Dhampirs and Sirens has caused all but one male Dhampir to die. To awaken the queen, they must enter her dream and win her love. After consulting with the Shrine Maiden, Sora and his companions travel to the Dhampir and Siren country, Oceand, and enter the queen's dream. Using Plum's magic, the queen falls in love with Izuna's grandfather, Ino Hatsuse, but fails to awaken. Having deduced this possibility, Sora uses a loophole in the rules allowing him and his companions to leave mid-game. Sora and Shiro reveal the Sirens do not know the conditions to wake the queen, so they split up to investigate; Sora, Shiro, Jibril, and Plum travel to Avent Heim, home of the Flügel, while Stephanie and Izuna search the previous king's hidden library.

The prologue covers Chlammy and Fiel's progress in their efforts to overthrow the Elves. Meanwhile, Sora and company are overwhelmed by Avent Heim's library. They decide to challenge all the Flügel to a game to enlist their help; the goal of the game is for Sora and Shiro to avoid capture by using Plum's flight magic and various katakana characters to materialize whatever they desire. Eluding capture, Sora and Shiro use the game to convince the head Flügel, Azril, to have Avent Heim join the Commonwealth of Elkia. After winning, Avent Heim's library proves to be fruitless but Shiro deduces what the queen desires; at the same time, Stephanie and Izuna finds evidence to support her theory. Returning to Laila's dream, Sora's immunity to the queen's seduction fulfills her desire of unrequited love and awakens her; their victory gives them rule over the Sirens and Dhampirs. That night, Plum reveals humanity also acquired the sirens' role as food for the Dhampirs and attempts to feed on Sora and Shiro; however, the two had deduced Plum's intention from the beginning and returned the responsibility back to the Sirens.

While on patrol, Riku befriends an Ex-Machina, a sentient battle-capable android, who is searching for the meaning of a heart. At Riku's request, she names herself Schwarzer, which Riku shortens to Schwi. He then takes her back to the colony where they are disguised as lovers. During the year they are together, Riku overcomes his emotional trauma while Schwi becomes more human. Following the destruction of their colony, Riku forms a group to end the war and marries Schwi. The group performs several espionage missions, forcing the warring species into a stalemate. Riku plans to harvest the energy from the battle, following the broken stalemate, in order to materialize and claim an artifact called the Suniaster; whoever possess it will have the powers of god. Schwi is killed by Jibril but is able to convince the Ex-Machina to join Riku's cause. Riku succeeds but is mortally wounded; in his place, Tet claims the Suniaster and brings peace to the world. Returning to the present, Sora and friends have the Shrine Maiden channel an old deus for a game.

Stepsiblings Sora and Shiro are known as Blank, an undefeated online gaming group. In reality, they are both agoraphobic hikikomori. After five consecutive days, they are challenged to a game of chess by an anonymous player. When Sora and Shiro are victorious, they are offered to be sent to a world run by games. Once they accept, they are suddenly summoned to an alternate world called Disboard by the anonymous player now recognized as the god of play named Tet, who departs after explaining that Disboard is governed by a set of rules called the Ten Covenants. After humiliating three bandits, Sora and Shiro travel to a hotel at Elkia, a nation inhabited by humans, where Stephanie Dola and Chlammy Zell are seen playing a game of poker to determine the next ruler. Sora is challenged to a game of poker against a woman named Lady Attitude for her sack of gold coins. Sora wins with a royal straight flush after Lady plays a full house. Stephanie begins to overthink when Sora claims that he will only play paper, leading her to play scissors, yet he easily wins by playing rock instead. Sora uses the Ten Covenants in order to make Stephanie fall in love with him, though Shiro makes the situation awkward. Sora and Shiro then move into the kingdom of Elkia with Stephanie, who later explains that Imanity represents the human race within Disboard. Imanity is the sixteenth ranked sentient race of the Exceed because they have no affinity to magic whatsoever. Stephanie desires to prove that her deceased grandfather Makoto Dola, the former king of Elkia, was not a foolish king. Sora uses the Ten Covenants in order to convince Chlammy to wear Stephanie's heirloom dress in preparation for her coronation. Although Chlammy salvages the situation, she is forced to challenge Sora and Shiro to a game. Chlammy later informs Sora, Shiro and Stephanie that she plans to cut ties with the Elves after she wins the game. As Sora and Shiro refuses to withdraw, Chlammy challenges them to a game of live chess, using animated chess pieces. After Sora deduces that charisma and leadership skills affect the gameplay, Shiro is shown to be incapable of sacrificing her chess pieces, losing her knight in the process. Sora takes over and rallies his remaining chess pieces, which gives him an advantage over Chlammy. However, Chlammy is forced to cheat by corrupting Sora's chess pieces. Sora and Shiro challenges Ino and Izuna to a game between the nations of Elkia and the Eastern Union for all of the land on the continent. The wager is to manipulate the memories of their respective partners Shiro and Fiel. After Jibril detects magic in the royal chambers, Stephanie trips on two sets of three disks on the floor. Using Sora's three disks, Shiro places each of them on an invisible uncheckered board, thereby winning the game of Othello and restoring Sora's existence. However, Jibril and Fiel are at odds due to the fact that the former accidentally slaughtered many Elves in Elven Gard during the Great War six thousand years ago. It is revealed that Chlammy's ancestors were slaves to Fiel's ancestors for generations, though Chlammy and Fiel treat each other as equals. Sora tries to convince Chlammy that public bathing is a great way to bond as allies. In the hidden library at night, Chlammy tells Sora that they cannot rely on chance and must avoid making any missteps. The next day, Sora, Shiro, Stephanie and Jibril visit the embassy once again. Before the game begins in the arena, Ino informs an observant public audience that the wager will be Imanity's king race piece and Elkia's territory versus the Eastern Union's entire land. Chlammy and Fiel monitor any trace of cheating. Sora, Shiro, Stephanie and Jibril, as well as their opponent Izuna, are transported to a virtual reality field that resembles Tokyo. Sora and Shiro snap out of their funk after Ino reminds them that they are in a virtual reality field. Ino explains that the challenge will be a game of cops and robbers, where they use lovey-dovey guns that shoot heart-shaped bullets against non-player characters in the form of animal girls. Stephanie remains clueless about the rules of the game. Sora, Shiro and Jibril battle against Izuna, who manages to evade even the most relentless attacks. When Sora, Shiro and Jibril hide under a corridor, it is shown that Ino secretly relayed their location to Izuna. Sora, Shiro, Stephanie and Jibril then regroup in a park, as Shiro makes proper and private adjustments to the plan of action. Executing the unspoken plan of action, it is later revealed that Izuna was tricked into believing that Shiro switched sides, but Shiro threw her shirt button in the trajectory of the bullet instead. Izuna soon finds herself in a dire situation when she is cornered by Sora and Shiro. This forces Izuna to use an ability called Blood Break, which augments her physical capabilities.

After easily defeating Sora and Shiro, Izuna lets her guard down and is consequently defeated by Stephanie piggybacking on a non-player character. Sora bound Stephanie to the Ten Covenants in order to hide her intent while Shiro calculated the movements of the non-player character in order to hide Stephanie's location. As Ino announces that Elkia won over the Eastern Union, Izuna laments the fate of the Werebeasts, though Sora and Shiro assure Izuna of their goodwill. Later on, the Shrine Maiden, the nameless representative of the Eastern Union, challenges Sora to a game of heads or tails in her shrine. The Shrine Maiden chooses tails as Sora tosses the coin in the air, though the coin lands on its edge. Sora convinces the Shrine Maiden to declare both of them winners. This would allow Elkia to share resources with the Eastern Union while the Shrine Maiden keeps the ability to self-rule the Werebeasts. Sora and Shiro believe that the Ten Covenants would allow them to unite all sixteen races in order to challenge Tet to a game. In the aftermath, Sora and Shiro request the Shrine Maiden to channel an Old Deus, the first ranked godly race of the Exceed, for the next game.

It was reported in May 2017, that over 3 million copies of the light novel are in circulation.[95] That same year, No Game No Life was the top ten selling light novel series with several of its books appearing in the top thirty selling volumes list.[96][97] Starting in its 2014 pool, the yearly magazine Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!, listed the light novel and the protagonists of No Game No Life beginning in its polls;[98][99] in addition, the series ranked fourth in Sugoi Japan 2015 polls.[100] Seven Seas Entertainment's localization of the manga was able to reach The New York Times Manga Best Sellers and ICv2's charts.[101][102] The anime series saw similar success and its home media made appearances on Oricon's weekly selling charts.[103][104] In April 2014, No Game No Life was one of the top recorded anime series on Sony's Torne;[105] a poll by AT-X ranked the series as one of 2014's top anime series.[106]

Anime News Network had four editors review the first episode of the anime: Carl Kiminger, Rebecca Silverman, Theoron Martin, and Hope Chapman.[107] Opinions summarized: Kimlinger enjoyed the premise and the concepts of games as battles; Silverman and Martin disliked the characters; and Chapman expressed absolute disdain, writing "nothing has made me roll my eyes, gag, or feel more irrationally angry this season than this insulting self-insert pandering trash heap". Carl Kimlinger continued the series, and published a positive review for the anime.[108] He wrote that the premise presented many flaws but were balanced out by other aspects: Sora and Shiro's "over-powered hero" archetype is balanced out by their flawed lifestyles, motives, and their "visible delight in crushing their enemies"; Stephanie Dola's mistreatment with gags and Sora and Shiro's growing respect towards her; and the harem aspect with Sora's apathy and interesting female characters. Regardless, Kimlinger praised the plot's "big games", calling them the reason to watch the series and described them as "steeped in trickery and strategy"; he added that despite knowing the protagonists would win, the fun is seeing how they do it. Kimlinger wrote the over-saturation art style will be an acquired taste for most viewers and praised how the animation really shines during the "big games", calling it an impressive display of fluidity and timing.[108]

Kotaku's Richard Eisenbeis was also positive towards the series, praising the protagonists' dynamic, echoed Kimlinger's sentiments about the games, liked the animation, but noted his dislike for fan service featuring Shiro.[109] He also ranked the series as one of the top five anime series of 2014, and recommended it for viewers who like smart characters and gamer humor.[110][111] IGN praised the character dynamics and questioned the amount of fan service.[112]

Australia for containing content that is likely to cause offence to a reasonable adult 14 No Game No Life was conceived during the serialization of A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives LN 1 A Kamiya s original idea was a fantasy setting with battles since he disliked drawing battles he replaced it with games He had intended to turn the idea into a manga series but an unspecified illness made him unfit to handle the workload While hospitalized for treatment the author imagined how his idea would work as a light novel and settled for that medium instead LN 1 A Kamiya began writing the first volume and was advised to break it into three parts due to its length LN 2 A In the middle of writing the second volume Kamiya moved to his home country Brazil for further treatment for his ailment in order to meet the volume s deadline his wife drew some of the illustrations in the novel LN 2 AAfter the third volume a new editor was assigned to the series LN 3 A Kamiya noted the third volume contained a lot of plot progression and was going to balance it out in the fourth volume with more lighthearted and carefree events LN 3 A Volumes four and five were written as a single volume since volume four lacked a climactic ending Kamiya had to restructure the story LN 4 A This along with communication problems with his new editor and other problems in Kamiya s life caused a month delay in volume four s release LN 4 A After completing volume five Kamiya was asked to submit volume six s manuscript before 2014 for the anime adaptation and to complete the volume before the anime s premiere most viewers and praised how the animation really shines during the big games calling it an impressive display of fluidity and timing 108 Kotaku s Richard Eisenbeis was also positive towards the series praising the protagonists dynamic echoed Kimlinger s sentiments about the games liked the animation but noted his dislike for fan service featuring Shiro 109 He also ranked the series as one of
