History edit

The station started as ZHj Yayasan Wayarles Pulau Pinang operating of George Town, Penang on 24 August 1934. With the independence of Malaya on 31 August 1957 Radio Malaya was split into two; the original studios in Singapore was taken over by a new station called Radio Singapura (currently known as Mediacorp Radio) and Radio Malaya moved to Kuala Lumpur going on air from the new location on 1 January 1959.

On 19 January 1971, Radio Malaya was known as Rangkaian Nasional (National Network) started broadcasting 24 hours a day as the first station in the country to do so.

On 6 September 1989, Rangkaian Nasional was known as Radio 1.

Its other predecessor, RIMA, which was planned to launch as of 1997, was only described as a "24 hour" "Malay traditional music and songs" radio station. [1]
