Background and release edit

After the release of the band's debut studio album, Am (2013), Ovlov went through a series of temporary break-ups. However, the band started to reemerge, playing some shows and releasing the Greatest Hits Vol. II collection in 2017.[3] Steve Hartlett, vocalist, songwriter and guitarist of Ovlov, has said that the majority of the songs were written around 2015 or 2016, but some were demos for the first record from around 2011 or 2012. The album was recorded around late 2016 or early 2017.[1][a] On May 21, 2018, they premiered the album's lead single, "Spright", via Stereogum.[3] They also premiered "Short Morgan" on June 11, 2018, via The Fader.[4] The album was fully released on July 20, 2018, via Exploding in Sounds Records.[2]

Composition edit

Tru has been called as an album from the genres indie rock,[5][6] alternative rock,[6] lo-fi[7] and pop-punk.[7] Pitchfork said that the track "Spright" is "slower and softer" than other Ovlov songs, and described it as a "gentler shoegaze".[8]
