His father comes from Foggia and his mother from Villafranca Piemonte. University professor of applied geology at the Polytechnic of Turin,[1] he entered the city council of Turin for the first time in 2006, elected on the Olive Tree list.[1] Re-elected in 2011 with the Democratic Party, he then assumes the position of party group leader;[1] in 2013 he became councilor for urban planning in the junta led by Piero Fassino.[1] In 2016, after the victory of Chiara Appendino, he returned to occupy the role of party group leader of the Democratic Party.[1]
Mayor of TurinEdit
In 2021, after winning the centre-left internal primary, he ranks as mayor of his city in view of the local elections.[2] After obtaining 43.9% in the first round, he was elected in the run-off on October 18 with 59.23% of the votes against the centre-right challenger Paolo Damilano.[3] He was inaugurated October 27, 2021.[4]
On 12 May 2023 he is the promoter of the event "Cities for Rights", which brings together mayors and local administrators at the Carignano Theater in Turin: the battle for the recognition of the rights of children of homoparental couples is at the center of the event.[5]
In July 2023 he was among the 40 mayors from all over the world selected by the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, an intensive training and management program developed by the Business School of the American University of Harvard and by the Michael Bloombergfoundation.[6][7]
University careerEdit
He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Politecnico di Torino in 2004. He was Assistant Professor at Politecnico from 2007 until 2014 and Associate Professor from 2014 until 2017. He is author and co-author of several national and international peer-reviewed publications, and appears in various conference and symposium proceedings. He is Editor of Geofluids (Hindawi-Wiley) and member of the Editorial Board of Environmental Earth Sciences (Springer).[8]
His research activity focuses mainly on the study of low-enthalpy geothermal systems and the hydrogeological problems related to the protection of groundwater resources. Other scientific interests regard the engineering geologic digital mapping, the energy security and transition, the raw materials and the mining sustainability.
He was appointed commissioner for national scientific qualification in the two-year period 2021-2023, a role intended exclusively for full professors who have bibliometric indices of their publications higher than the median value in the reference sector.[11]
