Jean-Pierre is of Haitian-American descent, and graduated from Brooklyn College and later received a master's degree in public policy from Stony Brook University.[1] Prior to elected office Jean-Pierre worked for the Suffolk County Legislature as a legislative aide to DuWayne Gregory.[2] She later worked for Congressman Steve Israel as a Community Outreach Coordinator,[3] and later for the Town of Babylon's Industrial Development Agency.

In 2014, Assemblyman Robert Sweeney decided to retire, leaving the district open for the first time in twenty six years.[4] Jean-Pierre announced her run, and easily attained the nomination before going to win the election with 58% of the vote.[5] She easily won reelection in 2016 and 2018.[6] In the Assembly, Jean-Pierre serves as Chair of the Subcommittee on Banking in Underserved Communities.[7]

Pierre resides in Wheatley Heights.
