Chavar

Chavar (Persian: چوار; also Romanized as Chavār, Chawār, and Chūār; also known as Kani Chavar (Persian: كانی چَوار) also Romanized as Kānī Chavār and Kānī Chawār)^[3] is a city in the Central District of Chavar County, Ilam province, Iran, and serves as both capital of the county and of the district.^[4] The city is populated by Arkavazi Kurds.^[5]

At the 2006 National Census, its population was 5,574 in 1,080 households, when it was in the former Chavar District of Ilam County.^[6] The following census in 2011 counted 5,775 people in 1,333 households.^[7] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 5,831 people in 1,562 households.^[2]

After the census, the district was separated from the county, elevated to the status of Chavar County, and divided into two districts and four rural districts.^[4]
