Story

Two American F-35 Lightning fighters entered Chinese airspace and caused havoc near the coast. Flying at super sonic speeds, the F-35s created sonic booms that damaged a oil refinery and affected local fishing boats. Chinese pilot Lei Yu intercepted the F-35s with his Chengdu J-10. Lei Yu pushed the limits of his crafts to compete against the 4th generation fighters; the Americans decided to leave. Lei Yu's craft suffered engine problems and was forced to make an emergency landing.

In a meeting, Lei Yu's superiors were critical of him pushing the jet that far, but Lei Yu argued it was the only way to fight against a superior enemy. The higher-ups discuss the main issue: foreign 4th generation fighters have a superior advantage over their 3rd generation fighters. Secretly, the Chinese have been developing their own 4th gen fighter to rival western forces: the Chengdu J-20. Commander Zhang Ting invites Lei Yu to join him in a new stealth fighter program and he agrees.

At the training facility, Lei Yu and his squad endures rigorous training by pushing their physical and mental limits. The J-20 was still going through refinement as the prototype Taishan engine was incomplete. They've been using alternative jets to test the engine's capabilities before using it on the J-20. During a flight test with Commander Ting, Lei Yu and Ting lost thrust and entered into a spiral dive. Lei Yu believed the situation wasn't good and he emergency ejected while Ting managed to regain control in the last minute and landed the plane. The incident would get Lei Yu grounded and he was expected to leave the training facility. During his down time though, he studied the mechanical flaws and proposed an anti-stall parachute. Ting decided to have Lei Yu fly with him on his last day to test the fighter's engine and missiles when the fighter suffered dual engine failure. Ting and Lei Yu agreed to eject together, but Ting lied. Lei Yu ejected but Ting stayed to manoeuvre the jet out of the city's way. He crashed and burned on the outskirts of the city. In the aftermath, Ting was given a military burial and Lei Yu chose to stay with the squad to complete the J-20.

Lei Yu and the chief pilot, Deng Fang, would test the newest engine after Ting's death. While testing the jet's ability to get out of a spiralling dive, a flock of birds struck through the cockpit, knocking out both pilots. Lei Yu managed to recover and attempted to regain control. The fighter has the anti-stall parachute installed and used it to get the J-11 out of the spin, but the chute couldn't be ejected. Lei Yu pushed the engine to rip out the chute and tried to regain control as the blood in his eyes blinded him. He managed to pull up and proved the new improvements worked; this marked the completion of their prototype and onto mass production.

In the next air encounter, American stealth fighters and drones infiltrated Chinese air space again. Lei Yu and Deng Fang launched in their completed J-20s and took out the drones and gave the F-35s a run for their money. Because they couldn't kill them to cause an international incident, Lei Yu warned them and the F-35s bugged out. In a mid-credits scene, Lei Yu and his squadron performed a surprise flyby by deploying coloured smoke above a soccer field to show respect to Commander Ting's son.
