Anupamaa

Anupamaa (transl. Incomparable) is an Indian Hindi-language television drama series that premiered on 13 July 2020 on Star Plus and streams digitally on Disney+ Hotstar.^[3][4] Produced by Rajan Shahi and Deepa Shahi under the banner of Director's Kut Productions, it stars Rupali Ganguly, Sudhanshu Pandey, Madalsa Sharma Chakraborty and Gaurav Khanna in key roles.^[5][6] It is loosely based on Star Jalsha's Bengali series Sreemoyee.^[7]

The story revolves around a Gujarati homemaker Anupamaa Shah. She's having a family-oriented and self-sacrificing nature. Some of her family members which include her mother-in-law Leela, her husband, Vanraj, and her children, Paritosh and Pakhi berate her for being a mere housewife and for her incomplete degree except her father-in-law Hasmukh Shah, younger son Samar, her younger sister-in-law Dolly, her husband Sanjay, and Dolly and Sanjay's daughter, Meenali. Vanraj is having a secret extra-marital affair with his colleague Kavya Gandhi for the past eight years in the disguise of friendship. Pakhi and Paritosh even replace her with Kavya for Pakhi's school competition and meeting with Paritosh's girlfriend Kinjal Dave's parents. But Kinjal's mother Rakhi starts sensing the relationship between Vanraj and Kavya. Samar also meets Kavya's USA-returned niece Nandini Iyer and they instantly turn into friends of their love for Anupamaa. Soon Anupamaa's best friend Devika Mehta learns of the affair and informs Anupamaa about it along with Kavya's husband Aniruddh but she refuses to believe them and expresses her faith in Vanraj and Kavya. As Paritosh and Kinjal become engaged, the family prepares for Anupamaa and Vanraj's silver jubilee anniversary and Nandini learns of the affair and informs Paritosh about it. But he is manipulated by Vanraj. On the wedding anniversary day, Anupamaa feels heartbroken when she sees Vanraj and Kavya become intimate. She decides to live her life on her own terms and Samar also breaks all ties with Vanraj after learning about it and starts calling him "Mr. Shah" instead of "Papa".
101-200	"Vanraj's Affair being exposed in front of family, Samar's proposal to Nandini, Anupamaa's decision to divorce Vanraj, and Pakhi's depression"
More people become aware of the affair, Samar falls for Nandini to which she initially declines and they decide to continue as friends. Rakhi exposes the affair in front of the whole family leaving them heartbroken. Vanraj also leaves home after Hasmukh refuses to support him and his family suffers a financial crisis leading Anupamaa to start working as a cooking and dance teacher. Paritosh and Kinjal elope and marry and Vanraj meets with an accident and starts realizing his feelings for Anupamaa. Samar also learns about Nandini's past accident which left her sterile due to the removal of her uterus and her hidden feelings for him. As Vanraj tries to confess his love, Anupamaa rebukes him and he returns to Kavya and loses his job. Thus Anupamaa decides to divorce Vanraj to set herself free from a caged relationship. However this leads to an ego hurt of Vanraj and he claims Anupamaa mentally unstable infuriating Samar. In the confrontation Kavya tries to instigate Samar to hit her but the latter ends up breaking her furniture and in return she falsely alleges him of hitting her. However takes back her complaint after Anupamaa threatens to reveal about her affair with Vanraj in front of police if she dares to ruin Samar's life. Later on Pakhi suffers from depression after seeing Kavya's real nature and Anupamaa and Vanraj decide to live together until Pakhi recovers.
201-300	"Kickstart of Samar and Nandini's love story, Anupamaa's fight with cancer, Anupama and Vanraj's divorce and post-divorce life of Anupamaa and Shahs"
While Nandini confesses her love for Samar, Kavya is molested and brought back to Shah's house. Later Vanraj and Leela objects to Samar and Nandini's relationship leading to a major drama and face-off between Vanraj and Samar on Mahashivratri. However Anupamaa objects to Samar for going against his father and he promises her to keep control over his anger and also vows to start "Anupamaa Dance Academy " to fulfill his, Anupamaa, and Nandini's dream. As the divorce date approaches, Vanraj fears that he will lose his family and Anupamaa leaving behind a letter. Later Anupamaa gets a call from Dr. Advait Khanna that Vanraj is in Blissdom's Wellness Resort of Surat. There, Anupamaa is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Samar and Nandini's engagement is canceled after the truth about Nandini's sterility is revealed and Anupamaa supports them. Anupamaa urges Vanraj to divorce her to set herself free, Kavya also divorces Aniruddh. She starts preparing for her wedding with Vanraj and threatens to imprison the whole family under fake allegations as Vanraj flees from the marriage. After his arrival, Anupamaa confronts him for lacking courage and commitment and he marries Kavya. Soon Anupamaa undergoes emergency surgery and post her recovery, everyone returns to Ahmedabad. Hasmukh asks Anupamaa to return as she will become an integral part of the family forever to which she agrees. As Kavya and Anupamaa live under the same roof, problems arise and she tries to turn family members against her but fails miserably.

Samar and Nandini establish "Anupamaa Dance Academy" with Anupamaa's ideas and family rejoices. But Vanraj and Kavya lose their jobs again and Anupamaa advises them to open a café in her dance academy and name it "Leela Ka Café". Kavya tries to turn Pakhi against Anupamaa but fails and then turns Vanraj against Anupamaa and it works as Vanraj instead of feeling grateful taunts Anupamaa for her help. Anuj Kapadia, an NRI business tycoon from the USA relocates to India and turns out to be Anupamaa and Devika's batchmate and friend. It is revealed that Anuj loved Anupamaa for twenty-six years and remained unmarried. He instantly becomes friends with Samar and other members of Shah's family after he saves the latter from a deadly accident. He gives Anupamaa a business partnership for his future project to which she agrees with the support of her well-wishers from the family. Seeing Anupamaa and Anuj's growing friendship, Vanraj seethes in jealousy. Meanwhile, Rohan, Nandini's former boyfriend, and obsessive lover also reenters her life to win her back and tortures Samar and Nandini for it, and even attempts to murder Samar and Anupamaa. But he is discovered by Anuj and leaves their lives fearing imprisonment for his father's scams.

As time passes, Vanraj, Leela, Paritosh, and Kavya slander Anupamaa for her growing friendship with Anuj. Tired of all taunts and accusations she leaves the house and Samar also follows her. They start living in a rented house. Kavya deceitfully makes Anupamaa, Dolly and Vanraj sign the property papers in her name. Anuj confesses his unrequited love for Anupamaa after getting irritated by some family members' slandering her, unaware of the fact that Anupamaa overheard his confession. Initially shattered, Samar and Gopichandra convince them to continue their relationship as friends. But Leela crosses her limits by brutally humiliating Hasmukh in front of the whole family and he leaves the house. While trying to bring him back, Vanraj asks Kavya to leave Shah's house with him and in a fit of rage, she reveals about tricking everyone by signing property papers in her name. This makes Vanraj vengeful and on the day of Hasmukh and Leela's golden jubilee anniversary celebration, he handovers divorce papers to her shocking everyone but she refuses to divorce him and returns back property to Hasmukh's name. Later Anuj meets with an accident while fighting some goons and Anupamaa starts realizing her feelings for him. While Samar proposes to Nandini for marriage, Vanraj signs a business partnership "Vanika Teamworks" with a girl named Malvika. But she turns out to be Anuj's younger sister and it is revealed that Anuj is an adopted child of Kapadias which makes Vanraj plot to steal his whole Kapadia Empire through Malvika. As time passes, it is revealed that Anuj's parents died in a road accident due to his mistake and in his attempt to save Malvika from her gold-digger boyfriend Akshay, he had her married but the man beat her, causing her depression. Kavya leaves after an instigation against Samar, Anupamaa and Shahs in Nandini's mind which leads to a major argument of her with Samar fuelled by Vanraj which even leads Nandini to question Samar's character and his love and loyalty towards her thus making him furious for not trusting his love. But they clear their misunderstandings after Kavya returns and Anupamaa appoints her in Anuj's company to monitor Vanraj so that he doesn't use Malvika for his own selfish needs. Vanraj manipulates Malvika against Anuj leading Anuj to transfer the whole Kapadia Empire under her name and he decides to start a new chapter with Anupamaa by working over her dance academy.
501-600	"End of Samar and Nandini's love story, Kinjal's pregnancy, Anupamaa and Anuj's marriage, Arrival of Kapadia family"
On the night of Valentine's Day while Anupamaa proposes to Anuj, Nandini leaves Samar due to her insecurities regarding marriage and returns back to the USA. This leaves him heartbroken and he vows to never believe in love again and decides to focus on his dance career and dance academy for his mother. Later Shahs prepare to celebrate Anupamaa's forty-fifth birthday and Kinjal reveals her pregnancy making everyone happy. But Paritosh refuses to be responsible for the baby and calls her a bad omen ultimately facing the wrath of the whole family and Samar takes the fatherly responsibilities of the child. Soon Anupamaa announces her decision to marry Anuj much to Vanraj, Leela, Kavya, Paritosh, Pakhi, and Rakhi's dismay. As the marriage rituals start, Malvika fires Vanraj, Kavya, and Paritosh for unprofessionalism and Samar convinces Pakhi and Paritosh to attend Anupamaa's wedding wholeheartedly and Kavya also joins team Anupamaa. As the wedding approaches Hasmukh is diagnosed with heart disease and decides to delay the surgery till marriage and it is publicly revealed. He promises to take care of himself and Vanraj's ego is hurt by Samar, Pakhi, and Paritosh's growing affection for Anuj. Anuj promises to remain a father figure and friend to them only till the time Vanraj won't come between Anupamaa and her children. Malvika leaves back to the USA for some legal issues and Anuj asks Anupamaa's children to call him their "Anuj Buddy". Later Anupamaa promises that no one can come between a mother and her children and takes a promise in return to understand her. Later Leela also joins the wedding wholeheartedly and Anupamaa and Anuj marry in a grand way. Later Anuj transfers the signing authority of Kapadia Empire to Anupamaa and the newlyweds decide to adopt an orphan Anu from Mumbai's orphanage. Soon Anuj's cousin Ankush arrives with his wife Barkha while their children Sara and Adhik meet Samar and Pakhi respectively. Later it is revealed that Barkha pressures Ankush to demand a share in the Kapadia Empire and uses Adhik as her puppet for this.
601-700	"Anupamaa dealing with class differences of Shahs and Kapadias, the beginning of Pakhi-Adhik's story and Paritosh's infedility"
As Shahs and Kapadias meet at the new Kapadia Mansion for the housewarming party, differences arise due to their class dissimilarity between Vanraj, Barkha, and Ankush's egos while Samar-Sara and Pakhi-Adhik start becoming friends with each other. At Kinjal's baby shower, it is revealed that Pakhi and Adhik are having an affair and Vanraj tries to control Pakhi which makes her rebellious. Meanwhile, Sara determines to expose Adhik to being a playboy and his past affairs in the USA in front of Anupamaa. Soon Anuj comes to know about Ankush and Barkha's bankruptcy and their ploy to get the Kapadia Empire and gets qualified to foster Anu with Anupamaa. Samar, Pakhi initially feels jealous but eventually accepts her as their sister while Paritosh and Kinjal get worried about their unborn child. Later problems start increasing as Pakhi and Adhik keep meeting secretly by bunking college and Barkha turns Pakhi rebellious against her parents by offering her a luxurious lifestyle. Anupamaa vows to never return to Shah's house after Pakhi crosses all her limits to badly humiliate her while Sara moves back to the USA for her further studies. Soon Anupamaa and Anuj arrange a Mahamrityunjaya Paath for both families amidst which he and Vanraj meet with a deadly accident over a cliff and Vanraj is assumed to be responsible for it. Anuj falls into a coma and Kapadias start misbehaving with Anupamaa and slandering her for her soft nature towards Shahs and cleverly takes control over Kapadia Empire. However, Anuj comes back to consciousness and clarifies that the cliff accident was just an accident only and Vanraj tried to save him but they both fell off the cliff and banish Kapadias from Kapadia's business. Samar also reconciles with Vanraj after learning the truth and starts calling him "Papa" again. While Kapadia plots through hook and crook to regain Anuj's trust Kinjal delivers a baby girl. Later Rakhi catches Paritosh having an extramarital affair with a girl named Sanjana. Soon Shahs organize a naming ceremony for Kinjal's baby and names her "Aarya" while Anupamaa learns about Paritosh's extra-marital affair. Paritosh blackmails Anupamaa not to reveal his affair but she refuses to bend down recalling her own trauma and reveals it in front of the whole family post which Vanraj ousts Paritosh from Shah's house while Kinjal suffers depression and moves to Kapadia Mansion with Aarya. Later Vanraj brings back Paritosh to Shah's house in an intoxicated state after meeting Kinjal. Kinjal also returns to Shah's house as she did not want to become a burden on Anupamaa and Anuj and decides to divorce Paritosh on the grounds of adultery and cheating and Rakhi reveals that Pramod too cheated upon her when she was pregnant with Kinjal which turned her into a ruthless woman. Later, Paritosh calls the Foster Care Officers to take back Anu and accuses Anupamaa and Anuj of not fulfilling their duties. However, seeing the parental love and care of Anupamaa and Anuj for Anu and vice-versa they leave while Anuj slaps Paritosh after coming to know about his deeds.
701-800	"Pakhi-Adhik's marriage and her tantrums, Anupamaa's fight against Dimple's rapists, troubles in Anupamaa-Anuj's marital life"
Seven days later, Shahs and Kapadias celebrate Kanya Puja at their respective homes while Samar decides to never get married owing to his trauma of failed relationship with Nandini and two divorces in the family and expresses his fear of ending up like Vanraj and Paritosh. Later both families come together to celebrate the Garba event while Paritosh turns a psychopath for Kinjal and Aarya and decides to take revenge upon Anupamaa. Later Kinjal decides to give a second chance to Paritosh for Aarya's sake and he goes to a rehabilitation center to control his anger issues. Soon women and men plan their separate day-out while Pakhi too goes on a secret trip with Adhik and coincidentally stays in the same resort where the women are staying and bumps into Anupamaa. While Leela and Vanraj become more strict on her making Pakhi more rebellious about her decision to marry Adhik, the latter reveals his true intentions to Anuj as he genuinely started loving Pakhi after seeing her love which made him reform himself. Later, Anuj gets Anupamaa enrolled in a three-month financial literacy diploma course while Pakhi and Adhik elope and marry leading to the former getting disowned by Vanraj. Later Paritosh returns from rehab and everyone agrees to a proper ritual wedding for Pakhi and Adhik on Anuj's insistence. Meanwhile Barkha continues to misuse Pakhi's greedy nature by influencing her against Anupamaa to the extent that Anupamaa slaps and kicks Pakhi and Adhik out of Kapadia Mansion and urges them to start their life by themselves. As a revenge Pakhi shifts to Nandini's house in Shah's neighborhood to trouble them with her unnecessary demands. Frustrated by drama happened at Pakhi's marriage Anupamaa goes on a vacation with Anuj and meet Nirmit and Dimple who eloped and married and were going to Nirmit's home as his family accepted their marriage. However some goons stalks the four people and rapes Dimple after knocking other three down. Fearing to face his family Nirmit leaves Dimple while the latter decides to fight for herself. Dimple's culprits threatens both families for supporting her but she manages to get justice for herself while Pakhi starts throwing tantrums on Adhik causing Adhik deciding to divorce her. However she reforms herself and he gives a second chance to their marriage while Anupamaa juggles between her responsibilities towards Aarya and Anu making troubles in her married life with Anuj.
801-900	"Anu's biological mother Uttara aka Maya's arrival, Paritosh sufferes from Paralysis and separation of Anupamaa and Anuj due to Maya."
Anuj's friend Dheeraj enters the scene after Anuj starts ignoring Anupamaa for her attachment towards Shahs and makes him understand Anupamaa's point of view. After reconciliation Anu comes back from her school trip and reveals about Maya who took care of her at trip. Later Maya arrives and reveals that she's Anu's biological mother and she has come to take back her daughter while Vanraj gets jealous seeing Kavya's friendship with her modelling photographer Mohit. Meanwhile Paritosh ends up in troubles due to him changing his business frequently and Ankush is revealed to be having a son from an extra-marital affair. Anuj assigns Ankush the task of finding about Maya's past and it is revealed that Maya was a prostitute. Later she reveals that her original name was Uttara, a priest's daughter who was sold for prostitution by her lover who cheated on her and Anu is her daughter from one of her visitors. She further reveals that she somehow managed to escape with her another prostitute friend Sushma and landed Anu at orphanage for her safety and reformed her life by completing her studies, opened an Event Management Company for women who suffered like her and renamed herself as Maya to secure Anu's future but just before arriving at orphanage to take back Anu she met with an accident and the same day Anupamaa-Anuj took foster care control of her. Later on Maya starts getting obsessed with Anuj and dreams to make a family with Anuj and Anu by ousting Anupamaa from their life as Paritosh sufferes paralysis and Anupamaa tries to give him support as his mother. However Kavya loses her modelling job due to Vanraj's constant habit of creating troubles out of his insecurities creating differences between the two meanwhile Maya keeps finding different ways to get close to Anuj despite Barkha's constant warnings. Kavya comes to know about Maya's obsession for Anuj post which she's asked to leave Kapadia Mansion. However she asks one more day to leave and Anupamaa agrees to do this. On Anupamaa's birthday Maya abducts Anu by manipulating her regarding Anupamaa and Anuj's fights for her. Later Anupamaa and Anuj separates as Anuj goes to Mumbai to live with Maya and Anu while Anupamaa moves to her parental home. Vanraj gets a new job and tries to manipulate Anupamaa and Anuj against each other. Seeing as an opportunity Barkha too decides to takeover Kapadia Empire alongwith Adhik while Dimple demands Anupamaa Dance Academy on her & Samar's name and he supports her eventually leading to Anupamaa transferring Academy on their names and decides to start afresh. Later she opens her new Anupamaa Dance Academy while Samar and Dimple misbehaves with family for their marriage. Soon Pakhi stops Barkha from taking over Kapadia Empire and convinces Anupamaa to look after it also.

Kinjal sends Anupama's name to Malti Devi's Gurukul, then Anupama and Bhairavi go to Malti Devi's Gurukul to meet her.

Production

Development

In February 2020, Rajan Shahi, the producer of Aai Kuthe Kay Karte, announced his plan to produce its Hindi remake, Anupamaa, stating, "This interesting concept around a mother's journey has been so inspirational that Star wants to bring it in Hindi too".^[8]

In early August 2020, the cast of the series recorded a special song for the Raksha Bandhan sequence titled "Aaj Rakhi Nau Tyohaar Chhe" (transl. Today is Raksha Bandhan's festival) in a Gujarati, Hindi and English fusion.^[9]

Rupali Ganguly was cast as the protagonist Anupamaa, returning to television after seven years.^[10] She said, "When I joined Anupamaa, I was a little plump and I told our producer Rajan Shahi that you want a heroine and at this age, let me lose some weight. But the producer told me that he didn't want a heroine but a mother instead. ‘I want a mother and you are perfect for the role because mothers are like this."^[11]

Sudhanshu Pandey was cast as Anupamaa's husband, Vanraj Shah.^[12] Paras Kalnawat, Muskaan Bamne, Aashish Mehrotra, Alpana Buch and Arvind Vaidya were cast as Samar Shah, Pakhi Shah, Paritosh Shah, Leela Shah and Hasmukh Shah respectively.^{[13][14][15][16][17][18]} Madhavi Gogate, Ekta Saraiya, Paresh Bhatt, Stuti Zakarde, Mehul Nisar and Bhakti Chauhan were cast to play Kanta Joshi, Dolly Shah Dhamecha, Sanjay Dhamecha, Meenali Dhamecha, Bhavesh Joshi and Jhilmil respectively.^[19][20][21] However, days before the filming resumed after the COVID-19 outbreak in late June, Additi Gupta was confirmed to be infected with the virus.^[22][23] She was replaced by Madalsa Sharma Chakraborty and the sequences earlier shot by Gupta were reshot by Chakraborty.^[24]

Days after premiering in July 2020, Shekhar Shukla, Nidhi Shah and Farrukh Saeed were signed to play Jignesh, Kinjal Dave and Pramod Dave respectively.^[25][26][27] Tasneem Sheikh, Anagha Bhosale were and Rushad Rana were cast as Rakhi Dave, Nandini Iyer and Aniruddh Gandhi.^[28][29][30] In April 2021, Apurva Agnihotri^[31] joined the cast as Dr. Advait Khanna for a cameo and completed his role in June 2021.^[32]

In June 2021, a public conflict arose between cast members, one group led by Rupali Ganguly with Alpana Buch, Ashish Mehrotra and Muskaan Bamne, and another by Sudhanshu Pandey, with Madalsa Sharma Chakraborty, Paras Kalnawat and Anagha Bhosale.^[33][34] There were rumours of "ego clashes" between Pandey and Khanna, which they both publicly denied.^[35]

In late August 2021 Gaurav Khanna was cast as Anuj Kapadia.^[36]

In September 2021, Deepak Gheewala was cast to play Gopichandra Karodia.^[37] Also that month, Varun Sharma was cast as Rohan to play a cameo and he finished off his role in October 2021. Next, Savita Prabhune replaced Madhavi Gogate as Kanta Joshi in late October 2021.^[38] In December 2021, actress Aneri Vajani joined the cast to play Malvika Kapadia.^[39]

In March 2022, Anagha Bhosale playing Nandini announced her decision to take a break from acting,^[40] and later quit acting forever, ending Nandini's character; she shot her last scene in February 2022.^[41][42] Later that month, Aneri Vajani playing Malvika also announced that her role was just a cameo and right now its shown on a long break due to viewers' disconnect with her role's negative development.^[43]

In May 2022, singer Mika Singh made a special appearance as Anuj's friend in Anupamaa and Anuj's Mehendi and Sangeet ceremony and to promote his upcoming show Swayamvar – Mika Di Vohti.^[44] During that month, Aneri Vajani announced her decision to participate in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 12 and quit the series.^[45][46]

Later that month, Rohit Bakshi^[47] and Ashlesha Sawant^[48] were cast to play Ankush Kapadia and Barkha Mehta Kapadia respectively while Alma Hussein^[49] and Adhik Mehta^[50][51] were cast to play Sara Kapadia and Adhik Mehta opposite Kalnawat and Bamne respectively. In an interview after being cast as Adhik Mehta, Mehta revealed that "he earlier auditioned for the role of Samar (which eventually locked to Kalnawat) in the casting phase of the series but it didn't happened at that time".^[52] Child artist Asmi Deo was also cast as an orphan Anu but her track was put on hold and resumed in July 2022.^[53]

In July 2022, Paras Kalnawat signed on to appear on the dance-based reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 10 on rival network Colors TV. Anupamaa makers objected and terminated his contract overnight.^[54] Paras said afterward that has character never evolved, and that he was unhappy with his role.^{[54][55][56][57]} Later after facing several controversies related to the series, makers replaced Kalnawat overnight by Sagar Parekh in the same month.^[58]

In September 2022, Alma Hussein who was cast opposite Kalnawat also quit the series, saying she was unhappy with the lack of character development.^[59][60]

In January 2023, actress Chhavi Pandey was cast to do an extended cameo of Anu's biological mother Maya.^[61]

Filming

Set in Gujarat, the series is mainly shot at Film City in Mumbai.^[62][63] Some initial sequences were shot in Ahmedabad during early March 2020.^[64]

On 13 February 2021, the filming was halted for a day for sanitisation when Paras Kalnawat playing Samar, tested positive for COVID-19 virus.^[65] The sequences of Kalnawat with Anagha Bhosale playing Nandini were cancelled including proposal sequence of their characters and were replanned until his recovery and return in late February 2021. However he shot some sequences from his home under his and his mother's quarantine period.^[66][67]

On 2 April 2021, Rupali Ganguly, Sudhanshu Pandey and Aashish Mehrotra who portray Anupamaa, Vanraj and Paritosh respectively and producer Rajan Shahi tested positive for COVID-19. Certain sequences were postponed and the story focused more on the characters Rakhi, Kavya and Leela while Ganguly, Pandey and Mehrotra shot for few sequences from their homes.^[68][69] A few days later, Tassnim Sheikh, Alpana Buch and Nidhi Shah also tested positive for COVID-19 and the story focussed more on Samar, Nandini and Pakhi's characters.^[70]

On 13 April 2021, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray announced a sudden curfew due to increased Covid cases in Maharashtra, while the production halted from 14 April 2021.^[71] Hence, the production location was soon shifted temporarily to Silvassa alongside other shows like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Mann Kee Awaaz Pratigya 2 and Aai Kuthe Kay Karte of the production house.^[72] In June 2021, the Maharashtra government permitted shooting within the state with certain restrictions, following which the whole cast and crew returned to Mumbai on 8 June 2021 and resumed shooting the following day.^[73]

Release

Anupamaa premiered on 13 July 2020 on Star Plus, replacing Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke.^[74] Since 2 October 2022, it is broadcast daily along with other Star Plus's shows.^[75]

Prequel series

Main article: Anupama: Namaste America

An eleven-episodic prequel web-series Anupama: Namaste America was released on Disney+ Hotstar on 25 April 2022.^[76] The story is set after ten years of Anupamaa and Vanraj's marriage in the year 2005.^[77][78]

Television special

Ravivaar With Star Parivaar (2022)

Th cast of Anupamaa participated as a team in the musical game show Ravivaar With Star Parivaar.^[79] It competed with the teams of other Star Plus's shows.^[80][81] Anupamaa emerged as the 2nd runner-up of the show.^[82]

Crossover

From 26 March 2022 to 28 March 2022, Anupamaa had a crossover with Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, where Anupamaa attended Akshara and Abhimanyu's engagement. She also fought against the world for her and Anuj's relation.^[83][84]

Reception

Critics

India Today stated, "Rupali Ganguly fits the character perfectly and aces the role of a Gujarati homemaker. The show strikes a chord with the homemakers as they can identify with the protagonist. Anupamaa has the right amount of emotions, drama, and spice. The show has the right mix of family values and a modern outlook. The show is a heartwarming tale".^[85]

ThePrint appreciated the series along with few other Hindi GECs based on the story of a mother mentioning that it delivered moral lessons and calling the character Anupamaa as paragon of virtue and farcical.^[86]

On its popularity, Yashika Singla of The Print noted, "It has become a feminist movement in itself. From young women commuting in the Metro to mothers and grandmothers at home, everyone is watching it."^[87]

Shephali Bhatt of The Mint stated, "At a time when the plot points of Indian TV shows get more outlandish every day — Anupama seems to be rewriting the Indian television playbook."^[88]

Adaptations

Star Plus's Anupamaa is an official Hindi remake of Star Jalsha's Sreemoyee.^[89] However its Marathi remake Aai Kuthe Kay Karte and Anupamaa both are produced by same producer Rajan Shahi under Director's Kut Productions and follows same plot.^[90]
