The 25th Iowa Infantry was organized at Mount Pleasant, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on September 27, 1862. They were immediately sent north to Minnesota assigned to the Department of the Northwest. Orders came each Company to report to Fort Snelling prior to movement by foot to Winona.[1] At Winona the Mississippi river was still open and they embarked riverboats to be taken south to participate in The Battle of Arkansas Post, fought January 9-11, 1863.

The regiment was mustered out on June 6, 1865.
