On October 18, 2023, the school announced that sophomore forward Jaxon Kohler underwent foot surgery and would miss the beginning of the season.[45] He was expected to return before Christmas.[46]

Scrimmage edit

The Spartans held a team scrimmage on October 21, to help bring in fans for the later Michigan State-Michigan football game.[47]

MSU played Division II Hillsdale in an exhibition at Breslin Center on October 25.[48] The Spartans won easily as six players score nine or more points. A. J. Hoggard and freshman Jeremy Fears Jr. each had a game-high eight assists. Carson Cooper and Tyson Walker each scored 13 points in the 85–43 win.[49]

Schedule and results edit

The Spartans will once again participate in the Champions Classic[50] and the Gavitt Tipoff Games.[51] MSU will play Arizona on Thanksgiving at Acrisure Arena in Thousand Palms, California.[52] On April 25, 2023, the Big Ten announced MSU's conference opponents for the year.[53] Due to the Big Ten's unbalanced schedule, MSU will play six teams once and the other seven teams twice. The Spartans will face Iowa, Ohio State, and Rutgers only at home and Indiana, Nebraska, and Purdue on the road only.[54] On June 18, it was reported that the Spartans would play Baylor in December at Little Caesars Arena.[55] On August 30, the school announced that the team would play Tennessee in East Lansing in an exhibition for charity with all proceeds being donated to relief efforts associated with the Hawaii wildfires.[56] The teams had previously agreed to play a closed scrimmage as they had done in 2022.[57]
