History edit

The name "Rokeby" means 'Hroca's farm/settlement' or 'rook farm/settlement'.[6] Rokeby was recorded in the Domesday Book as Rochebi.[7] There are no remains of the deserted medieval village of Rokeby[8] or the deserted medieval village of Mortham.[9] Rokeby was "Rochebi" in the 11th century and Rookeby in the 16th and 17th centuries.[10] On 1 April 1974 Rokeby was transferred from the county of Yorkshire North Riding to Durham.[11]
