History

The Ministry of Environment and Urbanization was established in 2011 by merging the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the Ministry of Public Works and Settlement. In 2018, the ministry's name was changed to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change to reflect its new responsibilities related to climate change.

Responsibilities

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change is responsible for the following areas:

  • Environmental Protection: The ministry is responsible for protecting Turkey's natural resources, including air, water, and soil. It oversees the implementation of environmental laws and regulations, monitors environmental quality, and works to prevent pollution.
  • Urbanisation: The ministry is responsible for promoting sustainable urbanization and improving the quality of life in urban areas. It oversees the planning and development of cities and towns, including housing, transportation, and infrastructure.
  • Climate Change: The ministry is responsible for developing and implementing policies and strategies to combat climate change. It works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase renewable energy production, and promote climate adaptation measures.

Organization

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change is headed by a Minister who is appointed by the President of Turkey. The ministry has several departments and agencies, including the General Directorate of Environmental Management, the General Directorate of Environmental Impact Assessment, the General Directorate of Spatial Planning, the General Directorate of Environmental Education and Public Participation, and the General Directorate of Climate Change.

Criticism

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change has been criticized by environmental groups for not doing enough to protect Turkey's natural resources and combat climate change. Critics have accused the ministry of prioritizing economic development over environmental concerns and allowing industries to pollute the environment without adequate oversight.

In response to these criticisms, the ministry has pledged to increase its efforts to protect the environment and combat climate change. It has announced plans to increase the use of renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve environmental monitoring and enforcement.
