Notes edit

  1. ^ Hela Provincial MP Anderson Agiru died on 28 April 2016. No by-election will be held due to the proximity of the 2017 election.[3][4]
  2. ^ a b Kairuku-Hiri Open MP Paru Aihi was unseated by the National Court on 3 December 2012 after he was found to have committed bribery. Peter Isoaimo, the successful petitioner against Aihi, won the resulting by-election in February 2014.[5][6]
  3. ^ a b The National Court voided the election of Ambunti-Dreikikir Open MP Ezekiel Anisi on 28 November 2012, finding that he had been too young to legally hold office when elected, and declared losing candidate and former MP Tony Aimo to have been rightfully elected. Aimo served as the MP for Ambunti-Dreikikir until Anisi won a Supreme Court appeal on 28 June 2013, at which time the court unseated Aimo and ordered a by-election in the seat. Anisi won the resulting by-election in December 2013.[7][8][9]
  4. ^ Ambunti-Dreikikir Open MP Ezekiel Anisi died on 24 May 2017, during the campaign period for the 2017 election.[10]
  5. ^ The National Court held that the election of Ijivitari MP David Arore was null and void on 29 May 2015, after he was found to have committed bribery. Arore won the resulting by-election in November 2015.[11][12]
  6. ^ Kabwum Open MP Bob Dadae became Governor-General of Papua New Guinea on 28 February 2017. No by-election will be held due to the proximity of the 2017 election.[13][14]
  7. ^ a b The National Court held that the election of Gumine MP Lucas Dekena was null and void on 15 January 2013 and ordered a by-election in the seat. After a series of appeals, the Supreme Court quashed the by-election decision on 30 August 2013 and instead directed a recount of the 2012 results. Nick Kuman, the successful petitioner against Dekena and a former MP, was declared the winner of the recount, and on 22 November 2013 a further National Court decision declared Kuman to have been duly elected.[15][16]
  8. ^ Madang Open MP Nixon Duban was unseated by the National Court on 3 June 2013 after he was found to have committed bribery. Duban won the resulting by-election in December 2013. Subsequent challenges to the by-election result led to a recount but did not overturn the result.[17][18][19]
  9. ^ South Fly Open MP Aide Ganasi died on 8 November 2016. No by-election will be held due to the proximity of the 2017 election.[20]
  10. ^ a b Pomio Open MP Paul Tiensten was sentenced to nine years imprisonment in March 2014 after his conviction on misappropriation charges. Elias Kapavore won the resulting by-election in April 2015.[32][33]
  11. ^ North Fly Open MP Boka Kondra was found guilty on misappropriation charges by a leadership tribunal in April 2015, and was recommended to be dismissed from office in May 2015. He successfully applied to stay the decision while he appealed to the National and Supreme Courts, but was dismissed in December 2016 following the failure of his Supreme Court appeal. No by-election will be held due to the proximity of the 2017 election.[21][22][23]
  12. ^ The National Court held that the election of West Sepik Provincial MP Amkat Mai was null and void on 4 October 2013. Mai won the resulting by-election in August 2015.[24][25]
  13. ^ a b South Bougainville Open MP Steven Pirika Kama died on 20 February 2016. Timothy Masiu won the resulting by-election in July 2016.[28][29]
  14. ^ a b Goilala Open MP Daniel Mona died on 4 February 2015. William Samb won the resulting by-election in August 2015.[26][27]
  15. ^ a b Angoram Open MP Ludwig Schulze died on 8 March 2013. Salio Waipo won the resulting by-election in August 2013.[30][31]
  16. ^ The National Court held that the election of Samarai-Murua MP Gordon Wesley was null and void in December 2014 after upholding an allegation of bribery during the 2012 campaign. Wesley won the resulting by-election in May 2016.[34][35]
