  2. ^ Fisher moved to Batavia, New York in 1857 and was elected to the 41st Congress as a Republican.
  3. ^ Ford's birth and death years are unknown.
  4. ^ Mayors of Hamilton serve as independents in accordance with the Province of Ontario's prohibition on official partisan participation in municipal politics. Despite this, some mayors have actively campaigned as members of parties or electoral slates.
  5. ^ A referendum was held during the January 1, 1924 election which resulted in the electors of Hamilton approving a change in the municipal election date to early December. Subsequent elections were held early December with inaugurations in early January of the following year.

  7. ^ A special election was held in 1973 upon the creation of the Region of Hamilton-Wentworth.
