In 1989, McClaughry was elected to the Vermont State Senate where he served until 1992.[1]

In 1992, he was the Republican candidate for Governor of Vermont, ultimately losing to incumbent Democrat Howard Dean.[7]

In 1993, McClaughry founded the Ethan Allen Institute. He served as president from 1993 to 2009, and as acting president in 2010. Currently he is vice president.[11]
