History edit

Iwakuni Station was opened on 25 September 1897 as a station on the San'yo Railway with the extension of the line from Hiroshima to Tokuyama. The San'yo Railway was nationalized in 1906 and the line renamed the San'yo Main Line in 1909. The station name was changed to Marifu Station (麻里布駅) on 2 February 1929, but reverted to its original name on 1 April 1942. With the privatization of the Japan National Railway (JNR) on 1 April 1987, the station came under the aegis of the West Japan railway Company (JR West).

Passenger statistics edit

In fiscal 2019, the station was used by an average of 5691 passengers daily.[2]

Surrounding area edit

The west side of the station is a commercial area, and the east side of the station is an urban and industrial area. Iwakuni Port is located to the north of the station, and Iwakuni Airfield (Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport) is located to the south of the station, both of which are about 2.5 km away from the station. Public facilities such as the Iwakuni City Hall are located about 1 kilometer away from the station.
