The 2023–24 Detroit Pistons season is the 83rd season of the franchise, the 76th in the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the seventh in Midtown Detroit. On April 10, 2023, Dwane Casey resigned from his position as head coach and transitioned to the Pistons' front office.[1][2] This is the Pistons' first season under new head coach Monty Williams.[3][4]
After the Pistons started the season 2–1, they lost a franchise-record 28 games in a row from October 30 to December 30, the longest single-season losing streak and tied for the longest losing streak in NBA history.[5] They became the thirteenth team in NBA history to have a winless month, going 0–15 in November.[6] Following a loss to the Dallas Mavericks on March 9, 2024, the Pistons were officially eliminated from playoff contention for the fifth consecutive season.[7]
The Pistons held the fifth overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, along with one second-round pick entering the draft.[8][9][10] On draft night, the Pistons traded for Marcus Sasser, who was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 25th overall pick and subsequently traded to the Boston Celtics.[11][12] The 31st pick was traded to the Celtics along with two future second-round picks.[11]
This was the first regular season where all the NBA teams competed in a mid-season tournament setting due to the implementation of the 2023 NBA In-Season Tournament. During the in-season tournament period, the Pistons competed in Group A of the Eastern Conference, which included the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers.[13][14] On November 17, the Pistons were eliminated from the in-season tournament following a 100–108 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.[15]
