Adair was the second son of Sir Robert Shafto Adair, 1st baronet, and his first wife Elizabeth Maria Strode.[2] He was educated at Harrow, and at St John's College, Oxford.[3]
Adair married Harriet Camilla Adair, daughter of Alexander Adair, on 10 July 1856. They had three sons, the eldest of whom lived for only ten years.[5]
On his death, his second son Frederick succeeded to the baronetcy, and after Frederick's death in 1915 the title was inherited by Hugh's third son, Robert.[5]
