Sheriff of Carmarthen

The office of Sheriff of Carmarthen dates back to 1223 when a writ of Henry II of England was addressed to the joint Sheriff of Carmarthen and Cardigan. A Royal Charter of 1604 raised the status of the Borough to that of a County Borough, making Carmarthen a county in its own right and replacing its two existing bailiffs with two sheriffs. Following the Municipal Corporations Act 1835 led to the number of sheriffs in Carmarthen being reduced from two to one.[1]

In 2017 Carmarthen Town Council hosted the annual meeting of the National Sheriff’s Association of the Cities and Towns of England and Wales.[2]

Carmarthen is one of only two towns in Wales that have a Town Sheriff, the other being Haverfordwest.
