During the period of 1912-1913, members the Serbian army lead by chetnik Mikajle Brodskimassacred a total of 46 Albanians in the village. The bodies were buried in mass graves.[1]

The village is attested in the 1467/68 Ottoman tax registry (defter) for the Nahiyah of Kırçova. The village had a total of 20 houses, excluding bachelors (mucerred).[2]
According to the 1942 Albanian census, Popovjani was inhabited by a total of 193 Muslim Albanians and 120 Serbs.[3]
As of the 2021 census, Popovjani had 142 residents with the following ethnic composition:[4]
Albanians 135
Persons for whom data are taken from administrative sources 6
Macedonians 1
