Paul van Loon

Paul van Loon (born 17 April 1955) is a Dutch writer of children's literature. Monster characters are a common element in his books. His best-known works are Dolfje Weerwolfje [nl; es] and De Griezelbus (book series) [nl; it], which have been adapted for both theatre and film. His book Raveleijn has been made into a television series, and is an amusement park show in theme park Efteling.

Van Loon has been working as a writer for over thirty years and has written more than a hundred books. Apart from the Netherlands and Belgium, his books have also been published in other countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Spain, Japan, and England.

Biography edit

In his youth, van Loon read the books of Tolkien, Bram Stoker, and H. P. Lovecraft, as well as local folklore such as Het Limburgs Sagenboek. He enrolled for an education as illustrator at the Art Academy of Den Bosch but did not complete his studies.[1] His first published short-story appeared in Brabants Nieuwsblad in 1977, after which he was also published in Donald Duck Weekblad, Okki, Taptoe and, Ezelsoor.[2][3]

Van Loon's first book, Boven op tante Agaat, was published in 1983. His work Foeksia de miniheks was published in 1989, and in 1997 he wrote the kinderboekenweekgeschenk [nl] LYC-DROP,[4] which was re-published in 2002 as Wolven in de stad. In 1997 Van Loon also wrote Dolfje Weerwolfje [nl; es].[5][6] Many of his books are illustrated by Hugo van Look [nl].

Personal Life edit

In addition to being a writer, van Loon is also a guitarist. He is married and has a daughter. He lives in Drunen.[7] He frequently tours through the Netherlands to give talks about his books to younger audiences.[8]
