Club career edit
Hoàng Anh Gia Lai - Arsenal JMG edit
At first, Nguyen Phong Hong Duy was placed on the Gifted Team.[2] After a short time, coach Graechen had Hong Duy play with the Hoang Anh Gia Lai Arsenal JMG Academy.[3][4] Hong Duy was often switched between the positions of defender and midfielder.[5] When the team was short of players, coach Graechen experimented with Hong Duy playing left-back for the Hoang Anh Gia Lai U19 team.[6][7]
At the 2014 Thanh Nien Newspaper U21 International Tournament, Hong Duy was returned to the midfield position and suddenly played very well.[8] He scored goals continuously and won the championship with U19 Hoang Anh Gia Lai.[9]
Hoàng Anh Gia Lai edit
When playing in the V-League, Hong Duy was again switched to playing as a full-back.[10][11][12] Although he had not played very well for the Hoang Anh Gia Lai team, Hong Duy was still called up to the Vietnam U23 team. When training for the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship qualification, many Hoang Anh Gia Lai players were called up, including Hong Duy.[13] However, Hong Duy was injured and could not participate in the AFC U-23 Championship qualification and the 28th SEA Games.[14]
