List of English cricketers (1861–1870)

This is a list of cricketers who played first-class cricket in England in matches between the 1861 and 1870 English cricket seasons. The sport of cricket had acquired most of its modern features by this time, and overarm bowling was established as a valid way to deliver the ball beginning in the 1864 season.[1]

The players included are those known to have played in matches which were given retrospective first-class status between 1861 and 1870, inclusive.[A]

  1. ^ Details of players are not always complete for this period. In some cases cricket historians have made assumptions regarding the identity of players where just a surname was recorded on original scorecards. Although scorecard information is generally complete from this period, bowling analyses are not always provided in the detail which modern scorecards would do so.

  2. ^ Ashwell, who was lived between 1851 and 1928, played a single first-class match for the Gentlemen of the North in 1870. He is known to have played other matches for Radcliffe-on-Trent, Bestwood Park and the Gentlemen of Nottinghamshire between 1869 and 1872. His brother Arthur Ashwell played two first-class matches for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club in 1876.[3][4]
  3. ^ Bailey played in a single first-class match for a Hampshire side in 1864. He is known to have played for a variety of other amateur sides in Hampshire between 1863 and 1871. Other than a name and initials no biographical details are known.[5]
  4. ^ Charles Barker, who was born at Waterbeach in 1834 and died in 1890, played a single first-class match for the Cambridge Town Club in 1861, the only cricket match he is known to have taken part in.[6]
  5. ^ JB Barker played his only first-class match for the Gentlemen of Kent in 1862. He is known to have played for Dewsbury the following year. His forenames are not known.[7]
  6. ^ Barnes, who was born in 1847 at Umballa in British India, played just once in first-class cricket in 1866. He is known to have played other matches for Brighton College between 1863 and 1866.[8]
  7. ^ Played two first-class matches for Cambridgeshire in 1868. Born in 1846, Batchelor attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge University and was a clergyman. He died in 1917.[9]
  8. ^ Berry, who was born at Thriplow in 1833, played in four first-class matches for Cambridgeshire in 1862. He played for a number of sides around Cambridge and was probably a professional cricketer employed at the university. He died in 1888 at Cambridge.[10]
  9. ^ Betts, who was born in 1846 and died in 1884, played a single first-class match for an MCC side in 1866.[11]
  10. ^ Bird is known to have played in only one cricket match, an 1861 match for the Gentlemen of the North. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.[12]
  11. ^ Blain is known to have played in only one cricket match, an 1862 match for the Gentlemen of the North. Other than a surname and initials no biographical details are known.[13]
  12. ^ Bruce, who lived between 1838 and 1880, played a single first-class match for the Gentlemen of the South in 1862. He is known to have played other matches for sides in the Surrey area between 1859 and 1863.[14]
  13. ^ Chandler played his only first-class match as a wicket-keeper for Hampshire in 1865. He scored 16 runs, took a catch and made two stumpings in the match. He is known to have played two other matches for Hampshire sides during the same year, all three of his known matches occurring within a few weeks of each other.   14. ^ Cole played a single first-class match for Middlesex in 1863, his only known cricket match. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.[16]
  15. ^ Cowell played in three first-class matches for Cambridgeshire in 1867. He played in other matches during the same season but is not known to have played cricket in any other year.[17]
  16. ^ Cox played one first-class match for the Cambridge Town Club in 1861. He is known to have played in a handful of other matches for Cambridge-based sides throughout the 1860s. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.[18]
  17. ^ Henry Ellis was born in 1840 and died in 1902. He played in a single first-class match for a Cambridgeshire side in 1864, but is known to have played non first-class matches for a variety of sides in and around Cambridge between 1859 and 1871.[19]
  18. ^ Ellis is known to have played in only one cricket match, a first-class match for the Cambridge Town Club against Cambridge University in 1861. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.[20]
  19. ^ Few lived between 1848 and 1931 and made both of his first-class appearances for Cambridgeshire in 1866. He later played non first-class matches for Huntingdonshire.[21]
  20. ^ Played his only first-class match for MCC in 1868. Fitzgerald was the brother of Robert Allan Fitzgerald. He was born at Shalstone Manor and attended Eton, where he played cricket. He played some matches for Bucknghamshire sides.[22]
  21. ^ Played in five first-class matches, all for Cambridgeshire between 1865 and 1869. He made other appearances for a variety of Cambridge-based sides during the 1860s.[23]
  22. ^ Francis was born at Southwold in Suffolk in 1826. He was probably engaged as a professional cricketer at Cambridge University and played all seven of his first-class matches for Cambridge-based sides between 1849 and 1862. He died in 1866 at Godmanchester.[24]
  23. ^ Fraser played his only first-class match for the Gentlemen of the MCC in 1861. He was born in Guyana in 1840, educated at Harrow and played for Liverpool between 1857 and 1870.[25]
  24. ^ John French made his only first-class appearance for Cambridgeshire in 1864.[26]
  25. ^ Maurice Hall, who lived between 1849 and 1914, played his only first-class match for the Gentlemen of the South in 1870. He is known to have played other matches for the Gentlemen of Nottinghamshire between 1868 and 1870.[27]
  26. ^ Hebert played a single first-class match for the Middlesex side in 1862. He played a number of other matches, most of which were in Canada between 1867 and 1880.[28]
  27. ^ Hibberd played his only first-class match for the Surrey Club in 1866 against MCC. He is known to have played three other matches for Surrey sides during the mid 1860s, occasionally as a wicket-keeper. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.[29]
  28. ^ Played in five first-class matches for Cambridgeshire between 1866 and 1868.[30]
  29. ^ Howitt is known to have played in only one cricket match, a first-class fixture for the Gentlemen of the South in 1862. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.[31]

  31. ^ Jiggins, who lived between 1938 and 1909, played four first-class matches, all for Cambridgeshire or the Cambridge Town Club between 1854 and 1861.[33]
  32. ^ Jordan, who was born at Stoke Newington in London in 1843, was a professional who was engaged by MCC at Lord's during the mid-1860s. His sole first-class match was for the Professionals of the MCC against an MCC side in 1867. His death is unrecorded.[34]
  33. ^ Key played a single first-class match for MCC in 1866. He was born in 1844 and died in 1875 and is known to have played in other matches for MCC sides during 1866 and 1867.[35]
  34. ^ Kindermann played his only first-class match for the Gentlemen of the North in 1867. He is known to have played cricket for a variety of other sides, including Liverpool, Richmond and MCC. He was born at Liverpool on 1840 and died at Aberfeldy in Scotland in 1918.[36]
  35. ^ King played in four first-class matches for Cambridgeshire and Cambridge Town between 1861 and 1864. He is known to have been born in Cambridge in early 1840 but no other biographical information is known.[37]
  36. ^ Kirkman lived between 1849 and 1879. He played a single first-class match for Cambridge University in 1870.[38]
  37. ^ Lawrence is only known to have played a single match for a New England Eleven in 1862, the only match a side with that name played. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.[39]
  38. ^ Little played eight first-class matches between 1859 and 1863, two for the Surrey Club and six for the Gentlemen of the South. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.[40]
  39. ^ Albert Masterson played in three first-class matches, all for Cambridgeshire. He lived between 1843 and 1887 and was the brother of Joseph Masterson.[41]
  40. ^ Joseph Masterson was born in 1838 and played in four first-class matches, one for Cambridgeshire and three for the Cambridge Town Club. He was the brother of Albert Masterson. His date of death is unknown.[42]
  41. ^ Mills is only known to have played a single cricket match, an odds match for Yorkshire against an All England XI in 1862. Other than a surname and forename no biographical details are known.[43]
  42. ^ Huson Morris was born in 1848 and educated at Lancing College where he played cricket. He played a single first-class match for MCC in 1868, in which he failed to score a run and did not bowl. He died in France in 1924.[44]
  43. ^ Muncey, who lived between 1835 and 1883, played in 11 first-class matches, all for either the Cambridge Town Club or Cambridgeshire between 1860 and 1866. He was probably a professional cricketer engaged at Cambridge University and played other non first-matches for a variety of sides.[45]
  44. ^ Needham played in a single first-class match in 1862 for the Gentlemen of the South.[46]
  45. ^ Newman, who lived between 1837 and 1897, played five first-class matches between 1867 and 1871, all for Cambridgeshire. He played other matches for Cambridge based sides over the same time period and was born and died in the town.[47]
  46. ^ Thomas Nichols was born at Dorking in 1844. He played in one first-class match for the Professionals of the MCC in 1867 and stood as an umpire in matches during the 1880s.[48]
  47. ^ Odams, who lives between 1843 and 1879, played two first-class matches for Cambridgeshire in 1867. He is known to have played other matches for the Cambridge Town Club and for sides of travelling professionals.[49]
  48. ^ Oliphant lived from 1837 until 1924. He played a single first-class match for the Gentlemen in 1861.[50]
  49. ^ Parkinson played a single match for a Middlesex side against MCC in 1863. He was born in 1837 and educated at Radley College.[51]
  50. ^ Parsons played a single match for a Middlesex side against MCC in 1863. He was born at Oxford in 1834, was educated at Rugby School and Trinity School, Oxford and was a banker. He is known to have played other matches for Ealing Cricket Club. Parsons died in 1912.[52]
  51. ^ Piper played a single first-class match for the Cambridge Town Club in 1861. He played other matches for Bedfordshire between 1865 and 1871 and was a solicitor in Bedford.[53]
  52. ^ Ricardo, who lives from 1843 until 1871, played a single first-class match for a Hampshire side in 1861. He was educated at Eton and played other matches for MCC between 1862 and 1867.[54]
  53. ^ William Saunders played three first-class matches for Cambridgeshire in 1865. He was the brother of Henry Saunders.[55]
  54. ^ Matthew Seymour played two first-class matches, both for Cambridge-based sides.[56]
  55. ^ Slater played in a single first-class match for Lancashire in 1865. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.[57]
  56. ^ Smalley played in two first-class match for Lancashire in 1869 and regularly in other matches for Enfield Cricket Club. Other than a surname and initial no biographical details are known.[58]
