Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare

The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) is a faculty of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London, UK. It is the standard-setting organisation for family planning and sexual health physicians in the United Kingdom. It represents over 15,000 healthcare professionals.[1]

In 2024, the president is Dr Janet Barter;[2] she succeeded Dr Asha Kasliwal in the post.

History and Mission edit

The National Association of Family Planning Doctors was established in the early 1970s. In 1993 the Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Healthcare was set up as part of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists; the faculty was relaunched as the FRSH in 1007.[3]

The Faculty's works to advance medical knowledge and training in sexual and reproductive health care, as well as promoting high standards of professional practice in the area.[4]

Membership edit

Membership of the faculty is open to physicians who have passed the faculty's examinations and maintain appropriate continuous professional development.

Examinations edit

The faculty has one examination:

  • Membership of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (MFSRH) is mainly completed by Specialty Registrars in contraception and reproductive health

Training and certification edit

The faculty also oversees the training of physicians who wish to train in inserting the intrauterine device or Implanon, by issuing the Letter of Competence in Intra-Uterine Techniques (LoC IUT) and Letter of Competence in Sub-Dermal Implants (LoC SDI).[5]

The faculty also offers short e-learning programmes.[6]

The faculty also awards several certificates in special skills applicable to physicians working in contraception, sexual and reproductive healthcare clinics:

  • SSM in Abortion Care
  • SSM in Menopause
  • SSM in Ultrasound

FSRH works with Wellbeing of Women to fund a one-year research scholarship.[7]

Publications edit

The faculty publishes a journal, the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care, which was established in 1974. The Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care was relaunched in 2018 as BMJ Sexual & Reproductive Health.[8]
