Charles Hulse was granted the honorary rank of major in September 1894 in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Artillery Militia,[8] with Hulse additionally holding the office of justice of the peace.[1] He joined the Imperial Yeomanry in February 1901, where he was given the honorary rank of second lieutenant.[9] Serving in the Second Boer War, he was killed in action in June 1901 at Braklaagte in the Orange Free State.[2]
