History edit

The name Baileyville was chosen for the community when the post office was established in 1874, despite the fact that it was formerly known as Smithland or Bailey's Store. 500 people, a Baptist chapel, and four combined steam gristmill-cotton gins were all present at Baileyville in 1884. In the 1890s, there were just 250 people living in the locality. In 1924, the post office was shut down, and in the 1930s, Baileyville's population rapidly decreased. There were only two businesses and 50 individuals in the hamlet in 1941. County highway maps from 1988 indicated a community hall along with sporadic businesses and homes. In 1990, there were 45 people living there.[2]

On February 11, 1950, a strong F2 tornado destroyed 10 homes. Five people were injured.[3]

Geography edit

Baileyville is located on Farm to Market Road 2027, 16 mi (26 km) northeast of Cameron and 31 mi (50 km) northeast of Rockdale in northern Milam County.[4]

Education edit

Baileyville had a thriving school system at the end of the 19th century. In 1903, there were three one-teacher schools for 118 White students and 238 Black students each. They joined the Rosebud-Lott Independent School District in the early 1970s.[2]
